Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

I was diagnosed with IBS 8 years ago and I take Bentyl. It doesn't help much unless I feel a "spell" coming on and I can take it right away.

I have the classic symptoms - SEVERE pain, sweating, constipation followed by dia. with the cramps getting better, but lately my stomach BURNS deep in my belly for a day or two later. I haven't had this BURN before. Is is classic?

Also, (this is the embarrasing question) For the past few months I feel as though I'm "never through" when I finally do "go". It's soft and messy and I sit there and "wipe, wipe, wipe," and still I don't feel through. I'll think I'm done and just have gas and then go the bathroom to discover I've got some in my pants! I was ruining my clothes so I started wearing "Maxi pads"! It's worse than being on your period!!! Is this a symptom?

Sorry so graphic, but I can't tell you how it helps to "tell" someone who "understands".

Thanks and Blessings!!!!!!!

Hi,

You didn't say but you should be taking a water soluble fiber supplement like Metamucil or Citrucel. Both are safe and are stool forming agents---bowel regulators. You need to start off slow until your system gets use to it because Metamucil will produce GAS then increase the doseage until you get a gentle complete BM--daily. Make sure you drink enough water.

The burning that you're having is not classic but does happen ----the diarrhea over a long period will wash your intestinal bacteria away along with vitamins and alot of nutrients. They need to be replaced and your intestinal bacteria needs to be put back in order. Eating a good brand of yogurt(Stonyfield Farms is GOOD) that has live acidophilus culture will help and taking a probiotic capsule on an empty stomach. A good brand is PB-8 and as well as Probiotica. Probiotica helped my burning and cramping when I first start it ---in just two doses.

I think the burning is happening because you have had this condition for so long.

Let us know if you have any questions and how you're making out. This is what is discussed on this Board!! WE have been there.

God Bless----Harry

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

Thanks Harry,

I'm going to start on the Fiber. I was taking a pill called "Fibertox" but it made me have cramping and diar.

what about the gas that I think I'm having and it turns out to be soft stools. Is that anything that you've ever heard anyone else talk about?

I'll do all the suggestions you listed and let you know how I'm coming.

Thanks so much and blessings!

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

I have been diagnosed with IBS(but i think it is something else, but the docs can't find anything wrong, so IBS it is!!LOL)

About your question:

what about the gas that I think I'm having and it turns out to be soft stools. Is that anything that you've ever heard anyone else talk about?

I am not that bad, but my friend was also was diagnosed wiht IBS, and she is finds it really hard to reach the bathroom in time, she has after having these accidents too, thinking it is gas, sometimes she don't even know she did it until she goes to use the bathroom!!.

Sometimes when there is not enough bulk in a IBS sufferers diet, the stools become really loose and it is hard to hold it in. Fiber supplments really do help this!! But be careful if you consume too much fiber, it can be the other way, the dreaded constipation!!, which, in my opinion is just as bad.
And if you find that the supplements are maing you have pains or a lot of gas, choose higher fiber foods, such as cereal! Cereal really helped me, i like frosted flakes(which is not really high in fiber but keeps my stomach ok, and bran buds, but i have to have sugar on it, it is too bland for my liking!!;-) Fruits and vegatables are also good, but try to avoid cabbage and other leafy veggies because they are known to produce excess gas which is not my idea of a good day!!ha, ha, ha, LOL
But try this, my friend has been trying this lately and she finds a big change!!

i hoped this helped you bit, try it out and if it seems like it is not working, go to your doc and see if he or she can give anything for it, but i know they would only recommend an uptake in fiber!! There are meds that slow down the action of the intestine, but to make stools harder, fiber is the key!!!

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

Thanks for the info. It seems like I can't get the right balance. Either it's constipation or the other. Never a "normal" if there is "normal" stool. Oh, I can't believe I'm talking about this, but it really does help to know I'm not alone!

Blessings everyone!

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

Hi,

I should have mentioned that burning is also a symptom of ulcers. Ulcers are usually caused by H.pylori bacteria that can be tested for with a blood test.

When your intestinal bacteria gets in balance---your stool should be normally formed---as I said water soluble fiber is a bowel regulator.

Please don't be embarrassed about talking about this--- Everbody has BMs. You know lack of open-discussions is one reason why colon cancer has become the third biggest cause of cancer deaths in the US. Most are preventable---if people would only discuss it with the Doctors Before and have colon exams???

God Bless---Harry<p>[This message has been edited by Harry (edited 05-26-2002).]

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

Hi, mcfadden. Welcome to the boards and as you know from reading other messages on here - we know what you're going through. I've suffered IBS for 20+ years, and at one time was taking Bentyl as well to control my "D", but it didn't really work. Like you, I would feel "gas" and find a stain in my underwear or even worse, actually know I was going to have a runny BM and not find the bathroom in time. I, too, was wearing maxi pads every day - just in case. Over time, the diarrea worsened, and I went to my doc in tears and embarrassment. I've increased my fiber with Metamucil wafers and I take calcium supplements which have helped some people have formed stools. However, I didn't have formed stools until I started taking Colestid (2 every morning) and for the past 3-4 months, my life has been wonderful! Colestid is a bile binder and helps form BM's into stools that are controllable, not runny. I no longer even take the Bentyl. The urgency to "go" is still there, but at least I can get to the bathroom in time. I still pass gas, but no stains!

Don't be embarrassed to talk about your body functions here. This site has been so helpful to me, and I appreciate all the support I've gotten from others out there whenever I've had a question. Keep us posted on how things turn out.

Take care,
Katie G

Katie G?

You mentioned a medicine you are now taking. Is it prescription?

I started taking "Fiber Choice" tablets today. (They are just over the counter.)

Thanks and Blessings!

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

Hi, again. Yes, Colestid is a prescription drug, and usually prescribed for high cholesterol. However, it has also been discovered to help those with chronic "D" in some cases. Have you had your gall bladder out? Some people (like me) have a worsening of IBS symptoms once the gall bladder is removed, and all the bile from the liver is just dumped into the small intestine during digestion resulting in - you guessed it - diarrhea, especially after eating. You might want to search the 'net under "bile salt diarrhea" (even if you still have your gall bladder, you may still find some helpful info). That's how I found out about Colestid or the powder form is called Questran. Both require a doc's order, but once I brought in studies regarding the use of Colestid for control of "D", my doc was willing to prescribe it. It may not work for others who suffer "D", but according to my research, many people with IBS/D have been helped by it. It probably does not work for those who suffer more serious bowel diseases that also cause "D".

Good luck and keep me posted,
Katie G

Re: Multiple symptoms (Very embarrasing ) Can you help?

Hey Mcfadden 4,
I had my gall bladder out and I am fine now! All my pain and daily runs to the toilet were due to a low functioning gall bladder/gall bladder disease. Insist on proper tests. And if they don't show up positive?... well, sometimes they don't. After 5 GI specialists and 13 doctors (and all negative tests) I finally changed my HMO to a PPO and found a surgeon who was willing to take out my gall bladder even without positive test results. Don't give up!
