I started out having IBS, about 5 years ago. Within the last year it has gone to chronic diarrhea. I have had every test known to man. I have done colon cleanse and parasite cleanse,' and nothing works. Doctors tell me its nerves and there is nothing I can do about it. Does anybody have any suggestions for me.
Hi, there. I know where you're coming from. I've had IBS for 20+ years, and in the last 5 or so, my diarrhea has become chronic, daily, and sometimes overwhelming to deal with. You might want to try increasing your fiber intake (I like the Metamucil wafers), which helps bulk you up. I also added Caltrate + D, which is a calcium supplement which sometimes helps bind you up. However, these remedies were only short-lived for me. Although I've continued with the added fiber and calcium for my own health, it does not control the "D". I've had the best control for the last 2 months with Colestid (available only by prescription from your doc). It's actually for high cholesterol, but has proven successful for some people with chronic diarrhea, because the main side effect is constipation. I take a much smaller dose than required for controlling cholesterol, since I don't have high cholesterol. Since the second day of taking it, I have had formed, regular stools EVERY DAY!!!!!! It has been a miracle drug for me. It has continued to work for me in situations that normally produce "D" (such as after a few beers, during my period, high stress times, etc.) I cannot guarantee it will work for you, but you might want to research it via the 'net. I researched areas under "bile salt diarrhea", and felt that described my problems to a "T", and then was able to show the articles to my doc, explain the effects of Colestid on chronic diarrhea, and he was willing to prescribe. There appear to be no long-term side effects according to everything I've read. The only real risk is that it may cause intestinal blockage due to constipation, but so far that has not been a problem for me.
As you know, there is no "cure" for IBS with "D", but there are sometimes things that help control it. Keep you chin up, and I wish you luck in finding relief.
As you may know there is a connecting between the Mind and Gut. Alot of work was done by a doctor at John Hopkins. The Doctor that directed the research was the Head of the Gastro Dept.and he was both Gastro Specialist and also a Psychiatrist. He worked there for 40 years and retired last year. I think his name is Dr.Schuster---you may want to do a search on his work.
Basically you have to take a very small dose of a depression type drug like Elavil(10 mgs) to help with the mind /gut connection and help diarrhea.
