Is Ibs this bad ??

I am posting on this board because I am really concern with my healthcare system being able to diagnose what I have and I feel they just use IBS to get rid of me because hospitals here in Canada are too busy. It started one year ago, I woke up with severe heart burns, I had those before since was the year before diagnose with an hernia causing GERD. But his time was allot different, more severe burning and more like a cramping abdominal pain. Bloating was present. They taught it was appendicitis on 2 different visits within a few months. Then one doctor just said its not appendicitis so probably a virus that comes back?? The thing is since Jan 2011 every about 2 months my symptoms come back but I feel fine for months before they come back, its like a cycle. Only one week I had diarea non stop like 20+ a day for a whole week. My typical symptoms are severe adbominal pain and on the right side i feel a sharp pain like a needle this is on and off and comes back even when I do not flareup. I will stop eating for days and everything gets me nausea, just the simple smell of garlic gets me sick. I am bloated and mainly am constituted ( probably because I do not eat), then when I try to eat I get fever chills and feel like something is hitting the bottom og my stomach quick ( like blockage) then this goes away after like 1 week or more but cannot sleep at night. They did barium enema x-rays and found nothing. Then lately in Nov I was really sick again and was told it is just IBS but that doctor refered me to a gastro specialist again. This specialist is making more test then ever. Barium small bowel follow true, allot of blood and stool test. He says eventually he would like to do a colonoscopy and one from the mouth also. He never talked to me about IBS as if it was not the case. The thing is that I lose weight and cannot sleep at night. For about more then 1 week every-time I flare-up.My questions is is IBS this bad, do anybody else on this post lose over 20 pounds in less then 6 months over this ??? I am sure I have something more serious but would likes people opinion if they had similar symptoms with IBS.

Re: Is Ibs this bad ??

Do you still have your gall bladdder? It is possible that it just quit working like mine did. I went about eight months without being able to eat solid foods.

Try this....

Eat some tortilla chips and wait. See if your pain comes back. Tortilla chips are very hard to digest and will make your gall bladder to try to work. I had an old doctor that figured this out for me. When I called him back to say yes, he ordered a test called a CCK Fraction Injection Test. Basically it is a test where they put some medicine into an i.v. (it's a high protein solution) Then all you do is lay still on a table for about 30 minutes while they take multiple pictures to gauge how well your gall bladder is working. Mine was at like 12%.

Funny thing is, you can't tell this from any other test....not an mri, ultra-sound or anything like that, because it looks "normal" but it's just not working.

It was one of the painful things I have ever dealt with. Hope this helps....

Re: Is Ibs this bad ??

lifewithfibro, makes allot of sense thank you. I still have all my organs lol My mother had gallbladder problems and its hereditary I am sure she had it removed. maybe this last doc suspects something like this since he ask me if I have pain near the right shoulder. because I do get a sharp pain on the right side. I usually get flareup at the beginning by eating red meat. Guess finally this doc is on the right track I am seeing him back in end of jan with results. If they did not find nothing I will ask about this test you did. I look at symptoms of gallblader and I have mix symptoms of that and chrons disease. Thank you again for the info.

Re: Is Ibs this bad ??

I had my gallbladder removed and a lot of pain went with it

I still have IBS and the flares continue.

Hope your Doctor gets everything figured out and you're feeling better soon.
