IBS definately can change from diarrhea to constipation in a matter of days or months. The biggest challenge is finding what types of foods cause the diarrhea and what causes the constipation in combination with what your anxiety, depression, and stress levels are at which makes Ibs symptoms tend flare up even more. I alternate between the constipation and diarrhea every 3-5 days depending on my stress levels and what I have eaten in the past hour to 12 hours. My biggest problems is after a explosive diarrhea episode in a matter of 2-4 hours with severe abdominal cramps is then I can't go for more than 3 days in a row and when I do try to go it feels like a knife is cutting me up inside my rectum trying to pass the hard stool. The only thing I can tell you from my personal experience with preventing the constipation is to drink lots and lots of water(at least 64 oz.),eat a high fiber diet (25-30 grams a day, take Citrucel in the morning and in the evening, make it a part of your daily routine to sit on the toilet at the same time to move your bowels. I found this to work the best and it reduces my IBS symptoms to almost nothing. Also, maintaining a state of calmness helps a whole lot as well !
