IBS-d and magnesium supplements

I have IBS-d along with GERD and a hiatal hernia. I have been given Nexium for my upper gastro problems which helps a lot. I also get dehydrated many times from my IBS-d and have leg cramps at night. This unfortunately is a symptom of both the IBS and taking Nexium (loss of magnesium/electrolytes/palpitations) I was told to take magnesium supplements for all this. My question is, magnesium causes diarrhea (and believe me I know it) Is there a specific magnesium that is less likely to cause diarrhea? I know calcium counter acts the magnesium but it doesn't seem to work with me. Someone mentioned time released magnesium (?) What a double edged sword.

thanks

Re: IBS-d and magnesium supplements

Hi there, I have IBS-C with LPR and a sliding hiatal hernia. I never had bad flare-ups until I stopped taking my magnesium supplements. This was 4 months ago. Since then, I have had two flare-ups the last one ending me up in the emergency room for 7 hours. After a CT Scan w/contrast and lots of blood work showing nothing, they sent me home. In pain, of course. Constant cramping, gurgling stomach, intermittent nausea, and back pain. The supplement I took for years was a basic 250 mg tablet by Nature Made and it was not time released. I am seeing my PCP tomorrow and am going to inquire about starting the supplement again. Four months ago she put me on a multi vitamin which was a DEFINITE no go...I'm starting to believe that was what has caused the past two flare-ups. However, keep in mind my IBS is with constipation, not diarrhea so that would be something you should discuss with your Doc. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Gotta love those long hours spent in the ER...ugh! Thank you for posting. I'm starting to believe in this magnesium thing for IBS suffers. I really do think it helps us. I just don't want to go overboard and get more diarrhea from it. My multivit seems to cause problems for me too. I've heard magnesium gel/lotion is the way to go for ppl with IBS. It bypasses the intestines altogether and still works just as well. I'm getting a bottle asap.
Thanks again and be healthy
