I hear they are smart, I hear they are clean, but I never have been one to put animals in cages for any reason. I think they would be way happier living in the woods with their animal friends.
I had a pet rat and he was very tame and friendly. I cleaned his cage because there was a certain odor from his cage. I had to put him into the woods since my caregiver didn't like the smell that came from him. I think the same sex rat is good but get a female and then you will have lots of babies.
not now, but a long time ago.....a friend rescued one from a lab and named him stuart.....and this was waaaayyy before Stuart Little came out.....he was a smart little guy, he acted like a dog, would come when he was called......
he used to stash cheese under the couch for later.
that is so cute awwww bless him cute stuart. i love hearing about animals been rescued from horrible situations- labs , cruelty etc....

babies are cute , but ya got to take into consideration that these babies grow up and all need homes. i think people who breed rats should find possible owners for the rats first.
i have 4 males. named Nugget, Spike, Smudge and Gremlin (hes a hairless rat and looks wierd but cute ha!!!). All tame and friendly never bitten me. When i say ''Rattttttys'' in a silly voice they recognise it and all come charging out to there house to see me and want to walk all over and lick my fingers. So cute.
I am adopting another male rat tonight , hes a blue dumbo apparently his name is Killbot , but doesnt answer to that name so the owner said feel free to rename him , which i will lol. His rat friend died 2 week ago so hes all by himself and the owner doesnt want to get anymore as hes 20 now and going to University and said once all his rats have gone hes not getting anymore.

I used to own rats (look at my screen name, lol)...but I don't have any right now...Me and my mom opened a short lived rat rescue...it was short lived because we didn't expect to be brought over 60 rats by one person (she bred for pet store, not as feeders, and left her rats in the care of her mom when she went out of town and her mom thought it would be a nice surprise to mate alot of her rats for her)...we ran out room and didn't have enough funds.
I don't have any rats personally but I dated a girl once who did and they are great pets. Very intelligent and there's really no reason to think any differently of them than any other pet rodent.
Right now I own two male rates -- Finn and Not Finn -- as they look 98% the same. Huck and Homer were purchased a few months prior, however they both died. The current ones are very much alive and kicking! Got to tell ya, they take up a fair amount of time - everyday!
From my own personal experience, it seems there really is no middle ground when it comes to rats -- people either really like them, or NOT!
