Worried mum, any help appreciated 🙂

Apologies if this is a long post but I'm beside myself with worry about my 28 year old son. A bit of info about him, he is very overweight & was diagnosed with epilepsy 4 years ago, which is controlled with medication. He has a stressful job (which he enjoys) & works 12 hour shifts.

5 weeks ago he went to the doctor and was prescribed amoxicillin for a throat & ear infection. Although the throat & ear pain went, he continued to feel unwell. The GP took blood tests & sent him straight to A&E, when the results were in the following day due to his creatinine being 193.

To cut a long story short, he is under the care of the renal consultants at a London Hospital as an outpatient. It was first suspected he had an acute condition, brought on by the infection they are now querying if it is chronic with an underlying condition as his creatinine level has remained the same (stable).

My worry is he is becoming more unwell as the weeks progress, in fact he's unable to look after himself, so I've brought him home which is about 45 miles away. He has a terrible headache that gets so bad (mostly on the right side) that makes him cry out with pain. He has no appetite & constantly feels nauseous. He has only come vomited twice but both times he was violently sick. He is light sensitive & spends most of the time in a darkened room. He's so exhausted he sleeps a lot & when the headache becomes u bearable he has to lay in bed with complete silence.

He is having a kidney scan tomo & we've been told he will be booked in for a biopsy. The consultants have said he's a bit of a mystery, if its acute he would have these symptoms, however they would have expected some improvement in his creatinine by now. If, as they suspect, it is chronic, his levels aren't bad enough for him to have any symptoms yet, therefore they will need to refer him. They will then need to decide where to refer him to - Neurology if they think the issue is with his headaches or Rheumatology if they feel the symptoms are more the exhaustion & nausea.

Driving him back & forth to London (it should only take 1 hour 25 mins but has so far been between 2-3 hours) is not only exhausting for me but is a complete trauma for him 🙁 He has a pillow to keep his head still, sunglasses to keep light dulled, a bucket in case he's sick & the air con on full.

He is drinking 2-3 litres of water a day which is enough to quench his thirst. He urinates about 6 times a night, sometimes more. He is managing a bit of fruit & a very small Pali meal every day (plain chicken, half a potato & broccoli as a rule).

Can anyone give me an idea of what we could be facing OR reassurance that this is normal for acute & will get better in time? I'm at my wits end, as at times he looks at deaths door & we are sleeping with our doors open, just in case - it's like he's a baby again as needs me to keep him safe.

Please, if you have any advise or suggestions I will be immensely grateful x
