Flactuating eGFR

Hi,

I'm a 53 year old male.

About a year and a half ago I went thru a routine check up and my eGFR was normal at 88.
Then early May of this year I did another yearly test and my eGFR went down to 51 !!! which indicates a stage 3a of CKD - all other results were fine.

I was very worried but my GP told me to retest again in a months time, needless to say I spent the month reading stuff about kidney disorders and came to this forum, I read the recommendation from "Cora" to drink plenty of water before the test and so I did... spent the last 48 hours drinking no heavy meal, no meat.

Today I did the test and it bounced back to 84 !!!

How can this be possible? could the dehydration factor contribute that much?

Re: Flactuating eGFR

eGFR is a fairly UNreliable measure. A glass or two less of water the day before your test and it can be way, way off. You need to look at the overall picture including your creatinine, BUN, albumin, and electrolytes.

In future, I would suggest trying to keep your hydration to the same amount of fluid the day before the test. Set out a certain number of water bottles or whatever. This way you know your tests will be more consistent.

Toronto1963 - what was your creatinine number with that drop in your gfr? I'm impressed that you were able to raise it back up! How much water did you drink before you tested again?
