Kidney Stones, a Family Affair!
In 2013, I suffered with a 1.7 centimeter kidney stone. Ended up with a blockage, a stent, two lithotripsies, stent removal, another blockage and a third lithotripsy before I was stone free in 2014.
In Oct. 2014, my husband was diagnosed with a small (3 mm) stone. In March of 2015 he suffered from congestive heart failure and was diagnosed with end stage emphysema. His first full day at the rehab center, he was having terrible pain in his side. He was having problems urinating and had suffered from BPH. Nurse at the rehab decided to put in a catheter because his bladder was pretty full, but that didn't work. He was transferred back to the ER and I explained that a small stone was seen on a KUB X-ray about five moths ago. They ordered a CT scan without contrast and low and behold there was a 5 mm stone. Lemonade and Percocet helped him pass the stone while in rehab!
Now our youngest daughter started complaining about her side and stomach really bothering her. She is in her 30s, where my husband is in his 70s and I am in my 60s. She'd recently had an IUD inserted and blamed the pain on that. An ultrasound at her OB-GYN's office confirmed that the device was correctly positioned, but the pain continued. In fact it go worse! She made an appointment to have the IUD removed! On a rainy night, just a couple of days later, we got a phone call that she was in so much pain she couldn't stand it any longer, so her and her husband headed to the nearest urgent care center. Her older sister and I met them there. Surprise! Guess what! A kidney stone. They gave her some meds and sent her home. She remained in pain! She and her husband both work full time and have a set of 2 year old twins! After dropping the kids at daycare a couple of days later, she tried to wait for me to get there, but I ended up following the ambulance up her driveway. Now she was vomiting, couldn't keep down anything. Back to urgent care then transferred to hospital. The following afternoon, they did a basket retrieval of the stone and inserted a stent. The following week the stent was removed. She decided she was going to see my urologist and had her records transferred. A KUB was ordered by the new Dr., because it couldn't be determined if there were more stones. Over the weekend she started having side and stomach issues again. Today we get the x-ray results...Condition unchanged!? The head nurse was stumped, really wasn't sure what was going on at all. Suggests my daughter talk to the other urologist that did the procedure! They tested the stones from all of us and they are all calcium oxalate based! I think there was more than one stone and that this second stone is now where the first stone was lodged in the ureter!
Would like opinions from others!
Nothing like keeping it all in the family!
