Kidney Stone Question

I had a sharp pain in my side one night for about 30 min and thought nothing of it. The next day I had another, much sharper pain in my side that lasted for about an hour. I went to the emergency room, they ran tests (with the pain going the whole time) and told me it was a 4 mm kidney stone. They told me to drink water and wait for it to pass.

(I should also mention that I had much trouble peeing...it took a while to get going and was quit difficult)

The pain continued for about another 4-5 hours (so about 6 hours total of pain that day). It was so constant that I couldn't really tell if it was moving. I drank about 48 ounces of water from 3 pm to 8 pm while taking percocet, at which time I went to pee. I felt something solid come out, but thought it was just my imagination.

Could I have passed it? I haven't felt any pain for the past 2 days (except for about 5 sec of pain in my penis one night). I've had no problems peeing. Or, is it simply that I'm in a period between "attacks"?

Re: Kidney Stone Question

it sounds to me, very likely you could have passed it. best thing to do, call your doctor and see if they can run x-rays or ultrasound or any tests on you. if you felt something solid coming out of you while peeing, then my guess would be, you passed it.

but truly, talk to your doctor about this. they can do tests on you to determine if it passed or not. but it's also true, attacks can happen whenever they want. i had 1 week, where i just had 1 attack and then the next week, i had 3 attacks. i had been suffering from kidney stones since october and here it is january and i'm finally stone free (knock on wood!).

keep drinking plenty of water for a few days....at least 64 oz or more. they recommend a person drink at least 2 quarts of water a day, i drink close to 4 or even 6 some days now. so, keep drinking water and make an appointment to see the doctor.

here's wishing you luck you did pass it though!

Re: Kidney Stone Question

Did the doctor give you a screen that you pee through so that, if you pass the stone, you'll be able to see it?

Also, stone pain is often described as "colicky"...i.e. the pain waxes and wanes...until it's actually being passed, the pain is not constant. So unfortunately, it is very possible that you might be having just a calm period and it'll return again.
