Hi Rhiannon. The answer to the question is, yes, stones can pass on their own; however, I disagree that she shouldn't see the doctor, and I"ll tell you why. Not all stones are the same, and not all stones are physically able to pass. As you can imagine, stones that are very large won't be able to pass, and there are also things called "staghorn" stones which are shaped in such a way that they can't pass either. The fact that you have seen blood in the urine makes me realize that you're actually seeing frank blood which is also not a good thing. The other risk is, if you have a stone in your urinary system, there is always the risk for an obstruction...this can lead to back up of urine in the kidney, hydronephrosis, and can lead to renal failure.
Don't take this lightly....at LEAST take your sister to get some imaging done.
