1 kidney smaller than the other

Hi,
I tried to post this earlier but it didnt work so Im trying again.
I recently had an abdo ultrasound done for something not realted to kidneys and the ultrasound came back fine but the radiologist mentioned my kidneys were different sizes. The left was 8.7 cm and the right was 10.5 cm. My doctor doesnt seem to think its a big deal. I dont have high blood pressure and i had blood tests done at the same time as the ultrasound..they werent really looking for kidney stuff but I asume they tested protein and creatine(they took 11 viles of blood). I also had blood and urine tests done at my physical 3 months ago and other than my iron being a little low(not in the danger range) nothing else was wrong.
Should I be concerned? Why would my kidneys be different sizes? Could I have been born that way? I have had other ultrasoundss done in my life and was never told my kidney were different sizes which means either they have changed size in the last few years or it was not mentioned before beacuse it was not considered a big deal. Should I look into this further?
Thanks

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

hi,
does anyone have any thoughts on my post? I am worried and am not sure if I should look into this further. Does anyone else have kidneys that are different sizes?
Thanks so much,
sarah

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

Sarah1,

I do not know the normal size of the kidneys, but during my research I have read that an increase in size can be caused by protein build up in the kidney. Which could mean absolutely nothing or the beginning of kidney disease. If all your levels came back fine then I would just pay attention to my body and if I feel something is wrong make them look into it more. I hope that this helps a little.

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

shannon,

thanks for your reply. I actually went to my doctor yesterday and it turns out they didnt test my creatine or BUN in any of the lab work they did so I am having that done today.

She is also contacting the radiologist who did my ultrasound 1 year ago and getting her to send my kidney measurements over so that we can compare them to my current ultrasound to see if i was born with kidneys of these sizes or if they have changed.

My kidneys are different size too, its quite normal - unless you have hydrophrenesis (sp ) could be hydrophrosis.....which is when you have a blockage in your kidney and the urine back flows and causes the kidney to swell. I think the left kidney is always a fraction bigger than the right.
Hope this helps

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

Hi, my kidneys are also different sizes. My doctor gave me an IVP and VCUG. I will be getting my results Thursday. My kidneys are, Left- 9.5x 4.1 cm and my right one is 11.0x5.6. I also started a thread titled "What are the normal sizes of kidneys suposed to be"?

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

Isabelle- Thanks for the info. You mentioned the left kidney is usually larger than the right. In my case the right is bigger than the left. I wonder what that means?

Becky - was it just the size difference that led your doctor to do more tests or did you have other signs and symptoms of kidney problems as well? What is an IVP or VCUG?

Thanks,
Sarah

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

Hi Sarah, an IVP is when they inject dye into the vein so they can get a better picture of the kidneys and a VCUG is when they put a cathedere in so they can get better pictures of you voiding so they can see if there are any blockages or anything.

I was having female problems that sent me to a doctor and when she was feeling my stomach my doctor said my liver felt inflamed so she sent me for an ultrasound of my abdomen. When the technition was taking pictures of my kidneys, she asked me if I have ever had problems with my kidneys. I told her I was leaking alot.

When my doctor got my pictures back she said my left kidney was bigger than my right and said it looked like my kidney was split in 2. So she sent me to a urologist who decided to do an IVP and VCUG. I get the results back Thursday.

I had flank pain and I leaked urine alot but that was about it. I made the mistake of looking up left kidney being bigger than the right and information on kidney disease kept popping up, I was so nervous. I looked up kidney disease and didn't have any symptoms so I'm not worried about that.

My doctor said it's possible it is genetic and I was premmature so maybe my kidneys didn't form fully or something. Either way, I'll know this week.

Do you have any symptoms or anything? Are you going to have any test done? Let me know how your doing.

Re: 1 kidney smaller than the other

Hi from what I've read its quite normal for the right kidney to be smaller than the left kidney as long as its in the normal range...depending on adult size etc and if its in the range of 15 to 20 mm of the left kidney.

Usually if hydronophresis (sp) is involved one of the kidneys will be larger or smaller than the other depending on which kidney is involved. But its the right one which is normal to be smaller...not the left.

Im only going by what I have read in articles...but you could look it up.

Hope you are all doing ok.

Isobelle
