I am assuming probably this child is not under the care of a physician or you would already have this answer. If I am correct or not with that assumption doesn’t change what I believe is the only correct answer. I think you MUST get this answer from a pediatric physician that has at least run some blood labs. If this stone or stones are not placing this child in immediate danger and other factors like kidneys functioning and other important functions then the most popular thing I have been advised by almost everyone and I have also read is drink lots of filtered water. Don’t do the cranberry juice like most think is ok to do. Util it is okayed by the doctor. Cranberry juice alters the urine Ph and possibly can make things worse. Cranberry juice is advised because of exactly this reason for a infection, it makes the urine more acid helping fight kidney/bladder infection. Many bacteria thrive in a Alkaline environment and Cranberry juice lowers the Ph towards or into a acid one. In addition there are many stones that will only form in a acidic environment thus making this not helpful for many stone formers.Instead a possible factor in the formation of more stones ! Why is this kid a stone former? Taking supplements can be very dangerous! Possibly potentially fatal to a ill person. A child makes things more delicate and risky. I can’t recall ever even seeing a dose recommendation table on any supplement package for young children . Obviously this child has an underlying cause. I believe this must be addressed. What is safe to take depends on this. Do not mess around with this. It is not normal, and may be a possible warning sign of ? This is even more challenging ,uncommon , and more urgent since it is in a 5 year old. I also like to add from multiple personal experiences that it HURTS real bad! A physician is a must for what I mentioned and for many more reasons .Trust me it is a must. I certainly don’t want to upset you or unfairly build this up. I tend to be an alarmist. I am sorry.Better safe then sorry when it is a health/illness isue.Probably things are ok,but just make sure. I can say I am not a doctor and I have had no training except from my own health issues .I hope nobody follows what I suggest with out consulting a physician that agrees before. If I am wrong and this child is under the care of one then get a new Doctor who has the answer you seek. I know I sound like a broken record but Kidney stones are not something to mess around with . No person can give you the correct answer to your question with out at least recent blood work and the knowledge of what kind of stone it is. Not all stones will dissolve no matter what you take .If I am mistaken then why for example do they use the lithrotripsy procedure on non emergency patients like me? I have had one of my stones analyzed that I passed and it was a calcium/oxalate stone. One that supposedly cant be dissolved. I also have had multiple imaging done and many other stones were identified in both kidneys. I started taking Urocit-k about 3 months ago and I only have 1 stone that remains. Could I have passed the other stones? Maybe, I have been feeling ill for a while. Maybe they dissolved. Urocit is potassium citrate but it too can be dangerous. Cant take it if you have high potassium, which is almost guaranteed if a person is in renal failure to name one example. It also has other side effects example: changing PH. Even though this is basically a supplement it has potential fatal risks with it to prove supplements are dangerous for a person especially a child with possible kidney problems, etc..
Sorry for this long response but I believe you should only get this answer from a doctor that has tested this child, and not give anything to him/her suggested by anyone until it has been doctor approved first. Best wishes.
