4yr old has TWO SMALL kidneys - Kidney Disorders Message Board

Hi. My four year old daughter had an ultrasound last Friday and we just found out that both of her kidneys are abnormally small for her age, size, weight, etc. She had blood and urine drawn today and we are awaiting those results. Her VCUG is scheduled for June 9th and I am in the process of scheduling an appt with a pediatric urologist to follow that VCUG appt. (everything seems to take forever!)

At any rate, my husband and I are very concerned and even more so since we cannot find anything on the internet to alliviate or answer our fears.

Any advice or knowledge in the area? I've been reading about one kidney being small but not both? What does her future hold?

My son, age 11, was diagnosed with bladder extrophy epispadius at birth. Basically he was born w/ the bladder on the outside of his body. As result of this birth defect he has abnormally small kidneys. In fact one of the kidneys is nonfunctioning. But he is extremly healthy. He urinates often and thankfully no catherder. Ocassionally he has some bed wetting but as he grows so does his kidneys and bladder. The bed wetting is becoming less and less. I wouldn't worry too much. Wait for the test results and remember some people live healthy lives with only one kidney. Good luck! Let us all know of her outcome.
