Small amount Visable blood in urine 2 times in 8 yr old...

My 8 year old son told me last night that twice when he went to the bathroom that he saw red or pinkish, called Doc, he ordered a Urinalisys today , won't have results until Fri or Mon. Of coarse, I am very worried and this is all I can think about. No discoloration today. What could this be? I have been reading on the net about these things and it sounds as though if the blood was found due to a test (but not visable), that is a better sign than if you accually see it then go for the Urine test. So I am worried about that-that it was visable to our eyes. He can not recall getting hurt or having any trama in his back or any strenuous exercise. Over a week ago, he was doing alot of running, imitating his big brother who is in Cross county. Surely it wouldn't take a whole week for the blood to show up. He wasnt' eating any beets or food that might do this, other than a few red twislers. Any advice, or similar stories, please respond. Thank you.

Re: Small amount Visable blood in urine 2 times in 8 yr old...

Has he had any sort of pain associated with this at all?It could be a stone or some other benign reason for the blood.it IS highly unusual though for someone so young to have bloody urine. Is there any family Hx of any sort of kidney or liver disorder?there are alot of different reasons for bloody urine, unfortunetly this can only be found out by further testing and alot of waiting. If nothing shows up in the bloodwork, I would request an ultrasound be done on the abdominal area. There has to be a reason. If the doc wont do an ultrasound if nothing else is found, demand one.As a parent, and the mother of a child who went through hell and back with liver and kidney problems, you have to sometimes get a little 'icky" with the docs in order to get the best possible care for your child. You need to find the cause.I hope it is nothing serious.please let me know what the labs say.Marcia

Re: Small amount Visable blood in urine 2 times in 8 yr old...

Thank you for your reply, that night after a ton of worrying, I noticed my son peeded his pants and then was reading about Bladder infections, and it was saying how sometimes the kids have a loss of control , but that you would have pain -the stinging with urinating, so I asked my son again about that and he admitted it "hurt" when he goes, he was afraid to tell me this as he thought there was something "extremely wrong with him" (his words), so then his symptoms matched the ordinary Urinary Tract infection/Bladder infection, called the DOc and got Suprax perscribed, been one full day and he says it still hurts but "not as much" as it did the day before. I might get the results of the Urinalisys tomorrow (I hope). From the reading I have done, it seems they can tell the difference from Blood from a Bladder infection to a Kidnery problem, something about "casts" in the urine. This is above my head, but I am feeling much better about him "having the pain & stinging". But it is REALLY incommon for BOYS to get Urinary Tract infections it seems, so that concerns me a bit. And I have read if you get one, they come back alot. So much to learn. I told him he needs to drink more water and not "hold it in" when he has to go-- Only reasons I can see that this might have happened. Noone in our family has any history of these kinds of things.
Sorry to hear about your daughter, It has got to be very hard going through things like this, not knowing what is to come, and dealing with the Docs too. Thank you again.

Glad it sounds like nothing major. You do need to talk to your son a little more in depth about the need to be totally honest with you when he is experiencing anything unusual having to do with his body.I know that most kids are indeed afraid to voice their concerns about things and in some cases certain things will come up that they think is just totally normal, you know what I mean?Asking direct questions when dealing with kids is usually the best way to get the info out of them, but it still can be tough.Just thought i would offer this suggestion to you.I hope he is feeling better soon.Marcia
