Stent removal....

I got stuck in the hospital last week for three days for what turned out to be a blocked kidney....they said most likely a stone but i'm slightly disturbed b/c a ct, sonogram, and ivp(ivb,ipb...something like that anyway) didn't actually show them a stone. They put a stent in which i had removed a few hours ago. They warned me that my kidney night "spasm" but I didn't think to ask what the heck that really meant. Now my back hurts, almost as bad as it did when I first broke down and went to the emergency room last week. They said I might need some tylenol, I took a Lortab and it still hurts alot... I'd call them and ask but I forgot my cell phone in my mothers car, and i don't have a home phone.(I know, what a dummy I am!) Anyway I'm guessing some of you have had to have a stent taken out and was wondering if you experienced this type of pain afterwards? I'm sure it's prolly no big deal but this whole experience has been scary for me.... Thanks a lot
Jen

Re: Stent removal....

Hi Jen. I had a stent removed this week and I had no pain at all, not during the removal or afterwards. They expected to find a cancerous tumour in the kidney basin, and found a huge stone instead. It was shattered and I think most of it is still in there. I felt much better after the stent was removed, it seemed to always irritate the bladder and caused a lot of bleeding. I had some cramps later in the day, but a few chunks of stone came out and I think this is what caused that. But no kidney pain or spasms.

Angry Re: Stent removal....

Hi Jen,
I just had stent removal yesterday. The only part of it that truly hurt was the insertion of the cystoscope, wow, i must have been sore already and it hurt like hell when they put it in, but the pain went away and the actual stent being removed didn't hurt me at all, in fact it felt good in a weird slippery way. By the time I got home my back was feeling sore and my bladder was burning, by the time i got onto the couch i was crying in agony, It felt like my kidneys turned into stone and everthing from my kidneys to my groin area were in such intense pain i couldn't stand it. I almost went to the e.r., but i knew they wouldn't do anything for it. I had a few dilaudid pain pills laying around that were my mom's so i took those. The vicodan that the doctor gave me did nothing to help. Anyway the pain lasted for hours, and the funny part is that i noticed you said you were nauseated. I was soooo nauseated, throwing up about every fifteen minutes. Nobody ever claimed to be sick to their stomach so I was getting scared that something else was wrong with me. I do have kidney infection from all of the stones I had, so i thought maybe the infection might cause nausea (?) From what you described it sounds like we pretty much had the same reaction to removal. Today i am slightly better, at least i'm not crying, but i am taking some heavy duty drugs for the pain. I refuse to ever have that cystosccope put into me without being knocked out again, and never will go home without something equivalent to morphine for those spasms again either. I sure hope you mended well. I am laying here wondering if this pain will be totally gone so I can cook for Christmas...

Re: Stent removal....

Hi All,

I just had to reply when I read this thread on stent removal. I had one in each ureter when I had my hysterectomy and bladder tack. My urologist had me do it in his office. I tell you what - that hurt like &$%(%+()_#W^& !!!!!

My husband drove me, because of my hysterectomy - I could not drive yet. I was glad he was there because I was crying and yelling really bad. Then, I had to have the other one removed and I knew just what it was going to feel like!!! I will never have another urologist procedure unless I am knocked out!

I told my husband, the uro dr. and his nurse, that it felt like I was having a baby come out of my ureters! :< I have changed urologists, since then and this one, does put me in outpatient, so I can be totally out. Did not feel a thing! :>

Anyone that has not had their stents out yet, do not do it in a dr. office.

Thanks for listening, and I am so glad that I read yalls posts. I makes me feel better to not be the only one that felt that way.

Take care.

Wannabe
