found mass on my left kidney very scared please help

I have had a dull ache in my lower left back for about three-four years now. I never really gave it any thought. I had one UTI about 2 years ago, blood in the urine. Took some meds and it went away. But still continued to have a dull ache in my lower left back off and on.
Yesterday, I felt as if my bladder felt full, so I assumed it was another UTI. In a half hour I went from that to full blown pain in my stomach and back. My husband took me to the ER and after vomiting several times, and going to urinate several times I felt better. They did a CAT scan as well of my abdomen. The Dr told me that the CAT scan showed "tracks" in my urethra and that I had a Kidney stone that had passed. He also stated that my white blood cell count was elevated, and that they wanted to do another blood test before I went home to make sure that my counts had come down. He did not mention anything to me about a mass on my left kidney. He said everything looked fine.
Today I got a call from the ER Nurse, and said that the Radiologist read my scan and that they found a "mass" on my left kidney. She said she did not want to alarm me, but that I should call my Primary Doctor for a follow up.
When I asked her about the size of the "mass", she said they did not write it down. But she said she would ask the doctor about the size. When she came back on the phone, she said the doctor said it was "relatively small" and that he did not even raise an eyebrow at it. He claims he would call me to discuss it but so far he has not. I called my PCP and have an appt tomorrow at 3:30.

Since I already had a CAT scan done, am I to assume that they can tell from the scan that it is either a Tumor or a Cyst?? Because Cyst was not mentioned at all. To me "Mass" means "Tumor" which means Cancer. Can they tell by a CAt scan if it is either a tumor or a cyst?

I do not have the bad pains today like I did yesterday, but I still feel like I have a full bladder, and I still have the dull ache in my back. But I have had this dull ache for 3-4 years now.

Everything I have read points me back to Cancer. I had blood in my urine(but may have been caused by the stone I don't know), lower back pain, plus now the Cat Scan showing this "mass"..........

I do not think the survival rate is good, and I dont think this is a Cyst. I do not know what to expect from my PCP visit tomorrow. I would assume she is going to send me for a biopsy to tell me whether or not this is malignant or benign. I have to assume the worst because from what I have read, Cysts are Asymptomatic, and mine are symptomatic. And Benign tumors of the Kidney are rare and are usually the early stages of Kidney Cancer. I am also 38 years old and have a 20 year smoker which I understand is the highest risk for this type of Cancer. I cannot leave my husband and children. I am just very scared, more scared than I have ever been in my whole life.
Thank you

Sorry to hear that you have a Mass on your left Kidney. Please be calm and don't scare yourself so much. Kidney Mass sometimes is cancerous and sometimes is not. When you do Kidney biopsy, please consider this will cause the Kidney bleeding and the result is not always accurate. When drs say the size is "Relatively small", it could be from 1cm to 5cm. The modern machines for Scan would tell what is between a Mass and a Cyst. When you see a Urologist, he/she will usually recommend to remove the Kidney if the Mass is over 2cm. You need to really think twice for the advantage and disadvantage. Good luck and God bless you.

Re: found mass on my left kidney very scared please help

I am easymoney's wife. Today I was told I had a large mass on my right kidney. I did not have the same symptons you had. I lost about 34 pounds in 3 months and started having night sweats, and lost my appetite. Otherwise I felt fine. The doctor ordered a CT scan last Friday to see if there could be a reason for my sudden weight loss. Today he ordered a chest CT to make sure I didn't have anything else going on. It was good. You are so right about being scared. I started shaking and did not cry until I got out of the doctor's office. I do not know how I got home even though I am only 5 minutes away from my doctor's office. I have cried so much today I don't think there are any tears left. I am seeing a kidney specialist on Thursday morning. Hope to get this thing took out as soon as possible. I am just going to put all this into God's hands and trust him to take of it.

I wish you the best.

Easy Money's wife
I am so sorry you are going through this.

Fortunately, I saw my Doctor today, and the "mass" this nurse called me about turned out to be only a 1 cm "thing" on my CT Scan. Report said "question of kidney stone" and some other jargon. My doctor suggested seeing the Urologist for a follow up, but since I have no insurance, I am going back in again in three months for a follow up CT Scan. She did not seem concerend and highly doubted it was cancer. She said it could be another kidney stone, kidney infection, or just a piece of spleen sticking out. I have had lower left back pain in my kidney for three to four years now.
My appetite is fine, no night sweats, no loss of weight. BP is good. Like the ER doctor told me, if I had this lower left pain for three to four years, and I had cancer, this "Thing" on my kidney would be HUGE. It was so small that the first radiologist claimed to see nothing, and the second radiologist begged to differ.
My Dr. said that it was so small it way to hard to tell anything from the scan so she gave me some Levequin since my white blood cell count was high(could be a Kidney Infection since my Urine came back negative for UTI)
And come back in three months, see ya later.

I pray that everything works out for you, Keep us posted.

I have seen your post and been thinking about you; if you are around, please post and let us know how you are doing. I know how it feels to be scared like that. Take care.
