Question What does this mean? HELP!

I went to a medical clinic thinking I had mono(my friend had just had it) because I was nauseous and tired all the time, was having headaches every day and generally just feeling worthless. I didn't have mono, but the urinalysis showed I had a fair ammount of protein in my urine and the doctor there said that I should contact my urologist. I'd had this problem back in February but I did a 24-hour collection then and everything came back OK, the only thing that was off was that I had low urinary calcium. Fast forward 5 months and the test results come back abnormal...the protein in my urine is over twice the normal limit and my urine output is half of the lower limit. The urologist says that the protein isn't a huge ammount but cause for concern but was extremely concerned about my lack of urinary output. I've had stones probably 6-7 times in less than a year and a half, urinary tract infections with nearly every round of them. Lately, what worries me is that my ankles puff up, usually in the evening and in the morning after I wake up and my face is so swollen when I wake up some mornings that my eyes are tiny slivers. My urologist has passed me on to a nephrologist to investigate all of this further but I'm concerned about what this means. I'm about to start law school and the bad test results aren't really what I need right now. I'm not familiar with kidney disease besides stones(which I am a little too familiar with) so what do these test results mean because my urologist wouldn't say too much?

Re: What does this mean? HELP!

You can't actually really tell what's going on without the blood work results as well. It is good that you have been sent to a nephrologist. I'm sorry to say that the puffiness is not a good sign, but this may still be a transitory thing.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but keep us posted after you see the neph. When is that going to be?

Re: What does this mean? HELP!

did this uro doc actually do any sort of blood/lab work on you at some point, and if so(i would think he would have by now,or at last should have)what were the results of that?what is/was your creatinine?

protien in the urine is usually a red flag sign of some sort of an underlying kidney disease in most cases.along with the blood work you should also have an ultrasound to actually get a look at what your kidneys are looking like right now,or even a cat scan.normally, blood work alone wont give you the 'true' overall picture of whats going on with any given organ,in order to really know, seeing the organs thru some sort of radiologic type testing is the really best way to actually find out.good luck with the appt with the neph, and please let us know what you find out.marcia

Re: What does this mean? HELP!

I haven't had a CT done since last summer, I did have an ultrasound done in february(on my birthday!) and they told me that they thought I had stones in my left kidney. I haven't had an ultrasound or CT done since then. They did do bloodwork, and I guess all of that was normal because the doctor didn't say anything about it. I don't see the nephrologist untill October, there's only 5 or 6 nephrologists in the northern part of this state I think, fortunately they are near me at the university. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks for all the help!
