Blood/protein in urine and low potassium

My blood work recently came back with a potassium level of 3.0. All my other blood work came back fine. She did a urine test and called to say there are small amounts of blood and protein in the urine but is not concerned and will recheck in a month. Should I seek out additional tests? If my blood work for kidney function is fine should I not worry? I have not been feeling well for a long time and would love to get to the bottom of this.

Re: Blood/protein in urine and low potassium

I would definitely worry about the low potassium. Are you getting cramps at all? You should be eating some more high potassium foods like bananas, tomatoes, and anything with a lot of fibre in it. The protein and blood could be due to a uti. Do you have a history of this?

Hi Cora, Thanks for your response. I am on potassium supplements that the Dr. gave me. I get some cramps mostly in my neck and hands. Many twitches in my hands. I dont think I have a UTI as she tested my urine. I dont have symptoms of a UTI either. I have been very thirsty and have heart palpitations. Do you think the reason behind it could be my kidneys even though my blood work came back ok?

If you are very thirst, have you been checked for diabetes?

Re: Blood/protein in urine and low potassium

Well, I was tested about a year and a half ago. Not a fasting. Im 32 not overweight. I figured the thirst was from the potassium being so low.

You don't have to be overweight to get diabetes. Also, low potassium doesn't cause thirst. The next time you get labs done, you should ask your doc to check. At least that could be ruled out.

Re: Blood/protein in urine and low potassium

My dr. isnt even worried about the low potassium. She is assuming I have an eating disorder because as she puts it "its the only way to get your potassium THAT low is with excessive vomiting" I will see what she says about the test but I am having a hard time with dr.s taking my symptoms seriously. Do you know if its possible for my blood work to come out ok and actually have a kidney problem?

You don't have to be vomiting to have low potassium, but you can do it by not eating properly.

If your other blood work is normal, then it probably isn't any sort of kidney issue. Are you dehydrated too? That can be hard on the kidneys.

Re: Blood/protein in urine and low potassium

Well she didnt mention being dehydrated. I cant imagine that I am I feel like I am drinking all the time. I have been drinking caprisun sport drinks for months. I feel so thirsty all the time and this is the only thing that seems to help me feel better. I am also having heart palpitations and nausea. I feel as though I am eating properly. I at least try to get in two good meals a day. On days I feel better I eat more. I love fruits and veggies. Im just worried that she is overlooking something and its going to get worse.
