constant kidney pain

40 years ago I had reflux surgery. I now have pain in my right kidney on a daily basis. I have had an IVP, CT scan and a nucular scan with lasix. My right kidney functions at 24% and is small in size, the left is large in size. All blood and urine tests come back fine. (except when I have infection.) My urologist said he can remove the kidney but would rather wait until it functions below 15%. Does anyone have any idea what this condition is called and how to cope with the constant pain?

Re: constant kidney pain

Have you started to begin osteoporosis recently. There are several things that can be happening:

1) As women age an began to "sag" (excuse the term can't think of a politer way to put that) the ureter may get compressed and pinched resulting in pain.

2) You may have excess scar tissue from earlier surgery.

3) There is a natural loss of renal function every day and as you drop below certain levels pain becomes your new best friend.

Have they actually given you a diagnosis?

Re: constant kidney pain

I was 5 years old when I had the surgery, until then I had constant infection. They are considering full right kidney removal. The Dr. says I will have to have it done some day. I have reqested a letter from the urlogist explaing my condition. I hope to learn more about it but I don't know what to call it or why it causes the PAIN.

Re: constant kidney pain

I asked my Dr. to send me a report on my condition and this is what he said. "The patient had a nuclear medicine renogram with lasix washout and IVP. These demonstrate a small atrophying right-sided kidney with 24% function. I see no clear evidence of obstruction, however she did experience distinct right-sided pain after the administration of lasix. Impression- renal atrophy and chronic pyelonephritis. Plan- If pain cannot be tolerated proceed with nephrectomy, this can be accomplished with hand-assisted laparoscopic or possibly straight laparoscopic approach."
Has anyone had this done and what could I expect? I am tired of the pain every day along with infection symptoms. Do you think I should have more tests to make sure it is not reflux? A second opinion?

Did it mention the percent function of the left kidney.
