uric stones that wont come out and kidney function almost zero now what? - Kidney Disorders Message Board

My father is having major problems with kidney stones and is facing other complications because of it.

He has had litho done to breakup and discharge the uric stones two months ago and they have not moved. It seems they have seeded themselves back together and are not moving out of the low of center in the kidney.

A recent IVP was done and indications of low to no flow was coming from this kidney. This does not appear to be a blockage from the stones. Possible infection shutting down kidney and stone lodged in wall of kidney?

Infections are on going as is the discomfort and pain.

His next appointment will be on Monday, Oct 15 with the Urologist to get the results and discuss the options.

He is concerned as am I. Has anyone had this type scenerio with their kidney stones?

Here is a short on his conditions: Help please

For 2 years, that we know of, I have a huge stone in my right kidney, which has been busted up 3 times using lithotripsy, and it has not passed and I have had 2 stone removals in left kidney.
An IVP was done yesterday and found little or no flow in that kidney, which may explain why I have not passed that stone.
I am a 66 year old man, Caucasian, with diabetes, high blood pressure, nerve damage, arthritis all joints and back, fungal infections on feet, groin, hands,and nails which I contracted/picked up in the Jungles of Southeast Asia and I was exposed to Agent Orange.
Stone is located low of center.
Urinary infections are on going.

Question is: What to do??
1. Leave it and wait.
2. Remove stone and wait.
3. Remove kidney and stone and go on.

At this point, I believe that the best option is to remove the stone and wait, not the kidney.

Has he tried dissolving the stone? Uric acid stones (if 100% uric acid) will dissolve if ones urine is alkalized. Get some pH strips to test his urine. An ideal range is between 6.4 and 7. Sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) will quickly alkalize the urine within a couple of hours. Club soda does the same but one has to drink more of it. Also, fruits and vegatables are a must in the diet. While the stone is dissolving, a stent would be recommended to allow urine flow out of the kidney and to prevent stone blockage of the ureter (in case the stone moves). There's also a drug called potassium citrate (aka Urocite-K) that will assist in the dissolving process. Talk it over with the Urologist. Maybe it's not too late to save the kidney!
