answer for severe kidney stones - Kidney Disorders Message Board

Hi I am new to the board but am already finding very helpful information.I am 37 year old male and have had to prior kidney stones . my doctors tells me i have more . Afer the second one I have majorly changed my diet but here is the question. Both times i have had them it was 2-3mm and very sharp .Each time I passed them after 2 days? and a total of 9-15 hours of severe pain.I mean like cannot move, on the floor crying ,throwing up , feeling like passin out ,Morfine would not even make the pain go away it would only take the edge off. Luckily I was at home both times these started but being I drive truck I am scared of it happening out on the highway. My doc says theres nothing he can do for the couple I still have I will just have to pass them if & when they would move. I live in fear of these things and am wondering would you all look into this more about having something done to remove these. Maybe they can't. I dont know and tha is why I was hoping for some advice and or opinions.Thank you,Brian

Hi Brian: I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm no stranger to kidney stones myself. I've had them off and on for many years. In July, I had a Lithotripsy for a 7 mm stone on the left side. I have stones on the right side too, but don't know how big they are. I'll find out in a couple of months when I'm xrayed again. I know the pain you experience when you're passing a stone. All I can say is, try not to live in fear of another stone passing. When you're not on the road, drink as much water as you can in hopes of passing the stones and preventing new ones. I've been drinking tons of water lately b/c the Lithotripsy wasn't a pleasant experience either. I've heard that drinking water with lemon juice in it can prevent new stones from forming. I wish I had better advice for you. :-( Good luck. I hope the stones pass without much pain. Do you still have pain meds. at home? I was given Toradol and Morphine the last time I ended up in the ER. That relieved the pain fairly well.

Did you have the stone(s) analyzed for type of stone? Various stones can be treated in different ways. Your 2-3mm stones can still pass although with much pain. Any larger and they can sometimes cause damage especially if urine flow is blocked.

I never felt my 3 mm ones come out.
