kidney,stomach & chest pains

hi
i posted on this board about 1 year ago
& found people to be helpful & supportive.
i wanted to give an update & maybe get further
help, support, ideas about my condition....
i found it very helpful to read other peoples
problems over the last year, so hopefully
mine can be useful to other people...

i'm 46 average build, active male
(never smoked, drink moderately).
i had a pyloplasty of left kidney in 2000
(just seemed to have been a genetic problem).
about 3 years ago my left & right sides started aching.
pain was'nt severe, but spread to my stomach area.
i had kidney checks (ultrasound, urine, blood, kidney flow),
they all showed my left kidney was enalarged & working
about 15% & my right kidney was fine.
in the last year the pain has continued & i've had further
stomach & also some chest pains.
i had my heart checked (blood checks, ECG, tread mill) which
show my heart is fine.
i've had an abdomen ultrasound (awaiting the results).
this week my doctor gave me some omeprazole to see
if this solves the chest pain (which has been on & off the
last month or so). i'll see if it helps.

my pain is'nt unbearable, when it gets bad
i take some dicloflex which helps.
the pain is mainly around the stomach & sides, the last
month or so its been around the chest as well.
i don't get much back pain.
the stomach & sides pain is worse when i sit down,
better when i stand.

i tried to be brief & i wanted to ask if anyone has similar
symptoms & any ideas what might be going on. please!

thanks
jas

Re: kidney,stomach & chest pains

Sounds like your left kidney is blocked again. The ultra sound will probably show your kidney/ureter area enlarged. I have a very similar thing to you but my left kidney is working 18%.

i could understand the enlarged kidney could be putting pressure on
the surrounding organs & causing pain on my left side,
but i'm getting pain on my right side & stomach, & over the
last month or so around the chest areas.

over the last week or so taking the omeprazole has definitely helped
my stomach & chest pains, so i'm beginning to wonder if my
problem now might be the stomach acid problem causing all my
other insides to ache since the tests so far indicate my right kidney
& heart seem ok...

thanks
jas

is your right kidney ok?
a year or so ago, one doctor did suggest i have my left kidney removed,
at the time i said no.
but maybe it might be a good idea to have my left kidney removed.
maybe that might reduce the pressure on surrounding organs?
when is a good time to have it removed, when it falls to 15%, 10%, 5%???
what happens if you just leave it there & put up with the pain?

sorry for all the questions, hopefully this discussion is useful to other people,
thanks
jas

Re: kidney,stomach & chest pains

I have a small damaged right kidney that functions at 23%. I was born with reflux and had surgery 40 years ago. I suffer from what they think might be almost constant kidney pain. My urologist said he would remove it now if I want him to, but they like to wait until it functions below 15%, anything above 15% can keep you off dialaliss if something were to happen with the good kidney. I have put this off and live with the pain because I'm not 100% sure that is what is causing the pain. The urologist acts like I'm wasting his time and my GP thinks I should take drugs to manage the pain. I'ts very frustrating!!!!!!

yeah i could probably live with the pain,
what i was worried was that i'd had these stomach & chest
pains over the last year, i went to A&E the 1st few times,
very worried that it was a heart problem.
but i'm fairly fit & active & the heart tests showed no problems.
so i don't think i have a heart problem,
i'm beginning to think its some stomach acid problem.
so gonna try get the doc to check that out.
if the pain is due to my left kidney, i can put up with
it, but if its something else i need to know
before its too late,
anyway thanks for listening,
& good luck
jas
