what could this mean? - Kidney Disorders Message Board

Hi folks,
Was wondering if my PCP is being a little too casual with my problem?
A couple weeks ago.. woke up with urgent need to urinate... then without any warning... PAIN!, blood and several small blood clots. The pain continued to the degree of me crying for a couple hours. Went to Doc, he gave me BactrimDS. No relief. Went back, changed antibiotic to Macrobid. In the meantime, urine cultures came back and I also got a look at the dipstick test done at his office. Cultures showed the bacteria was resistant to several drugs, including levaquim, all cillians, mycins and Bactrim. The dipstick test results showed... RBC-large, WBC large, something I can't remember...leucosites...or something like that... large, and Protein 300+++. Now, I don't know why there would be 3 plus signs...or why there would be that much protein in my urine, but he said....it's from the blood, don't worry about it. I am a diabetic, and I think I should be worried about it.
I have had the typical UTI's in the past... starts out with a little burning...urgency...then pain and maybe blood. But this was very different in how it started...and the protein. Any thoughts? Thanks for reading and for any input. Robin

Did the MD do any x-rays or kidney scans? Maybe it is kidney stones. I've had them before (several times) and the pain is unbearable.

The good news is that diabetic nephropathy is typically painless and involves little or no blood so it is not likely the diabetes causing this. It does sound like kidney stones and it would probably be a good idea to get this checked out.

Thanks for your replies.
I am relieved to know that it's not likely diabetes related. I insisted on a recheck today at my gyn appt. There was no protein found!!! I guess my PCP was correct

, but I've been brushed off so many times before that I suppose i am overreactive to things. Since the pain was primarily located in the lower abdomen...I am beginning to think it may have been a bladder stone.....no fever, vomitting or flank pain to indicate kidneys.... just the abundance of protein and blood. Oh well, seems like the worst is over now.
