Re: Enlarged Kidneys

just how did they determine your kidneys were enlarged? by palpation or an actual ultrasound? with the type of kidney disease you can get from diabetes,i don't believe(not 100% certain tho)that actual enlargement is really a huge symptom. unless they do an actual ultrasound you really wont know exactly why the actual enlargement is present. there could be many other types of kidney diseases, such as a cystic type, that would most defintely cause enlargement. you just really need to know for certain if you have not already done so,just what is causing that enlargement to even be there ya know? an ultrasound using the doppler can look at the kidneys themselves and also check bloodflow thru them too. this test would be a good one for you to have right now.

how is your lab work? any out of range labs yet or any protien in your urine? knowing those two things would help. i would ask for an ultrasound so you and your doc can actually "see' how your kidneys really look in there. i have polycystic kidney disease and my labs are amazingly all within normal ranges and have been since i found out i even had this all my life, but didn;t find out til i was actually 40. but despite those great labs,my kidney ultrasounds show a hugely different story. they are currently over three times their normal size and just covered both inside and out with poly globs of huge cysts. you just really need to know why the actual enlargement is present and what is causing it to begin with. i just really don;t think, but like i said, not totally certain, that diabetic kidney disease, espescially in the early stages actually enlarges kidneys. if nothing else, see if your doc can refer you to a good nephrologist for monitoring.

please let me know ho things are going and what ou find out. something just doesn't sound right with that particular dx to me anyways. marcia

Re: Enlarged Kidneys

I had a Ultrasound last week and they found my Enlarged Kidneys, right now I have to go for a urine test in the next week to check for protein as i was on BP med to protect my kidney and he had to take me off of it, as i was getting a bad cough from the med and he aske me to go at the end of Sept to check to see if there is any protein, when i was first DX with the Early stages of Diabetic kidney disease i had protein in my urine

I will keep you posted and i will post my urine results when i get them as i get a copy of all my tests results from the blood lab

Hugs
Martina

Re: Enlarged Kidneys

did they actually tell you "why' the kidneys enlarged? i just was not aware that enlarged kidneys would be there in the earlier stages,ya know? that usually would come at the later stages. i guess that part could be just an individual thing there too. you just never know what the human body is going to do to you and when either. been there done that one to death myself. i am pretty certain that if you already were found to have protien before,it will almost certainly be there now too,it just kind of goes with the territory with any kidney disease. its usually one of the very first early indicators of underlying kidney disease. i am just wondering about that 'why' thing. by all means, please keep me posted. good luck,Marcia

megacalycosis HB User
Re: Enlarged Kidneys

i just want to let those with enlarged kidneys to know that there is a fairly rare kidney condition called "megacalycosis" or MC. my wife was recently diagnosed with MC. she was initially MISDIAGNOSED with UPJ obstruction (blockage in the ureter) causing fluid to back up into the kidney (hydrophrenosis).

MC is an enlarged kidney due to an excessive number of calyces (broccoli looking things in the kidney which produces the urine). due to the excess number of calyces, the kidney swells with fluid.

you can google "megacalycosis" for all the details...

this condition is allegedly symptomless and the kidney functions normally. however, with MC the kidney is extremely prone to infection and stones. (by the way, i say "allegedly" symptomless because my wife has been experiencing moderate to severe kidney pain for many months now...)

if anyone out there has any experience or knowledge with MC my wife and I would greatly appreciate any information...
