kidney stone and kidney function?

About 3 yrs ago i started peeing red blood and having lower back pain on the right side, went ot hte dr and they thought it was a uti, gave me antibiotics and sent me on my way nothing changed, so they gave me a dif kind of med and still nothing so they did exrays and scans and saw a kidney stone that was 6mm and sent me to a urologist. The urologist did some test, my kidney function was fine only thing he saw was a kidney stone and said that it wouldnt be causing my pain because it was still in the kidney, made me feel like it was all in my head. I finally asked him to blast it and when we were at the hospital he said he 'couldnt see the stone' to blast it. I got pregnant and had a baby in sept and couldnt stand the back pain anymore and finally asked him to do lithotripsy, the stone is now 1.2cm...it has grown! I also asked him to check my kidney function before we do it to make sure they are still ok, I had an isotophe(spelling?) gfr test, & i went to see him on monday and he said my kidney function is down to 50%, im terrified! Do you think a kidney stone that has grown that much could cause my kidney function to go down to 50%??? I made an appt at the mayo clinic here in jacksonville for next week to get another opinon. I had a sonogram done in april to check the size of the stone and he said the kidneys looked fine in the sonogram and he doesnt know why they have gotten soo bad so fast? please help
any information is greatly appreciated! also i forgot to add that im 28 yrs old without high blood pressure or diabetes, and started passing small 1mm and 2mm stones at the end of my pregnancy in sept and a month or two after I had my daughter

Re: kidney stone and kidney function?

What type of stone(s) did you pass? This is critical to know before any treatment recommendation(s).

Re: kidney stone and kidney function?

Are you under the care of a nephrologist (kidney specialist)?

I haven't experienced the stones, but I have survived kidney failure, and kidney disease, as a result of having very high blood pressure for years.

I hope I can ease your mind a little bit until you get this straightened out. I was about you age when I began having hypertension, so you definately want to keep that under tight control. At my worst (5 years ago), my kidney function was about 15%, but I avoided dialysis. Your kidneys can operate at 50%, and you can raise that number. Mine is back up to about 40%, and climbing.

There are medications out there to protect your kidneys, and a good nephrologist will help you. Best wishes

Re: kidney stone and kidney function?

The stones I have been passing are calcium oxalate. I have not been to a nephrologist yet. Iam going to wait for these test results and see what the other urologists say. I did call a nephrologist office and told the receptionists what was going on and she told me it would be best to get the results from this urine test and talk to the other dr and she said she would get me in asap when I do those two things. What kind of medications have u taken?

Re: kidney stone and kidney function?

In my case, malignant hypertension was behind everything. It lead to strokes, vision loss, heart problems, and the kidney damage too. My BP was the underlying cause, so most of my medications were to manage BP. As I finally found the right combination of medications, and the BP came way down, my kidneys began to repair themselves. That is just my experience though, yours could be totally different... I hope you get some good answers when your results come in.
