The creatinine level is a blood test that is a measure of kidney function. The higher the number, the lower the kidney function. A normal creatinine is typically less than 1, and people usually need dialysis when their creatinine is at least over 5 (sometimes lower, but usually higher).
There are two types of kidney problems - acute, which means that something happened quickly to cause the kidney function to decline (often happens in the hospital, but can happen as an outpatient too) or chronic, which is when the kidney function is reduced for usually more than 3 months.
Do you have previous values? Another important test is a measure of protein in the urine - has this been done?
