I had an ultrasound last month because I was having some abdominal pain, and my gastroenterologist suspected gall stones. The ultrasound showed no abnormalities, except for scarring in my left kidney, which was probably already there due to my UPJ and UVJ obstructions. My question is, is scarring in the kidney something to be concerned about? There have been two times in the past couple of months where I have had severe left kidney pain when I walk a lot (e.g., at a theme park). The pain goes away when I sit down. Any comments or advice is greatly appreciated!
I don't think that the scarring is anything to be unnecessarily worried about. Unfortunately, after repeated infections and such it happens naturally to try to repair the damage. Anyway, as long as the blood tests that indicate kidney function are normal, then I would not be unduly concerned. These would be you creatinnine and urea levels and also if your blood pressure is within normal limited.
If you have both kidneys, then if one kidney becomes slightly damaged and underfunctions, then the other kidney will take over a lot of the function. You can live perfectly well on one kidney.
Thanks Super Sarah! Your answers were helpful...I think I will be okay, too. My left kidney (the enlarged one) is actually functioning better than the right one - 52% left, 48% right. But that was more than a year ago, in January 2001. But anyway, thank you!
