Question Symptoms or troubles of having one kidney?

Hey! I have a guy in my class who only has one kidney. Are there any symptoms or troubles people have if they have one kidney? Like is it true that they sunburn easily?

No, you can live perfectly well on only one kidney and there should be no ill effects from this at all.

Has he always had one kidney or has he had one removed due to infection? If he has had one removed, then the other kidney should enlarge slightly to take over the work of the other one. He will need to have regular check ups though to ensure that the one kidney is functioning well and he should ensure that he drinks plenty of water and not become dehydrated. Other than that, there should be no effects at all of only having one kidney. I have to say that the sunburn is just a myth, as tanning and burning are to do more with the sensitivity of the skin rather than the kidneys.

Thumbs up

Thanks for your reply, Super Sarah! He had to have his kidney removed 5 years ago because he said it was bad. Thanks for clearing up the myth and answering my question!

I have a friend who lives perfectly well with no kidneys at all. Three times a day for 20 minutes he conects himself to a machine. Life would be better with a transplant, but that's the UK's health service for you

Yes, I know. I have worked on the renal wards in the UK. Does your friend do CAPD and is he on the transplant list?
