Red face Creatinine level 1.3 / combined with Levaquin 500mg?

My doctor recently called me after a blood test (done 5/27/03) to schedual a echo on my Kidney's... The PA was concerned about my creatinine level of 1.3. Everything else in my labs were normal.

I have searched normal levels over the web, and depending on the source, find anywhere from .6 - 1.2 to .8 - 1.5 as a normal Creatinine level. Mayo clinic posted 1.4 as the normal high range.

Just prior to this blood test, I had inguinal hernia repair, and had experienced an infection that slightly impared the flow of urine. I was prescribed Levaquin 500mg oral tablets and had been taking this antibiotic at the time of the blood test(5/22 - 5/29).

If someone could tell me if the combination of my infection, or taking Levaquin, has been known to increase creatinine levels, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if creatinine levels vary between blood tests, I would also appreciate learning a bit about that.

I am a 30 yr old male, with no other health issues.

Thanks so much,
Mark

Hi- I understand your confusion. My son is 11 yrs old and they still don't understand what is causing the protein in his urine. He goes back to his neph on July 28th. But for your question- his has been done by 3 different labs over the past 2 years and they are always reported different. One blood test reported serum creatnine=0.6 norm range[0.5-1.2] where the other blood tests were in different values. The only one I have been able to watch that is usually reported the same is his BUN level. I still can't explain how he is doing. I have just made up my mind when we go back to the neph- Im going to make him tell me where this is going. He has talked of biopsy soon as well as medication. I would call my neph and ask him if it could be the meds or is it going up on its own.

Thanks for the reply Sharon, my doctor called last night to inform me that I should collect 24 hours of urine, then have my blood drawn on the day I turn it in. I have been drinking water, to see if I was just dehydrated.

My doctor discounted the emphasis on the lab test, and said that if the urine and blood look fine, that I should cancel the schedualed echo, and not worry about it.

I had a feeling that values like this vary... and know now that my antibiotic had nothing to do with my creatinine level. I am counting on the fact that this was a random reading, or that I was just dehydrated.

Can I ask how high your sons creatinine has been in the past? It sounds a little odd that tests such as echos are based on a one time test that is just above a labs standards.

Thanks again, and best wishes to your son,
Mark
