Stomach Upset On Urocit-K? - Kidney Disorders Message Board

I had a uric acid stone and have been on Urocit-K for several months. I had no problem before but didn't take them as often as I was supposed to. I started again last month because of the summer, and the likelihood of a stone forming if I got dehydrated. Now I wake up every morning with diarrhea. Has anyone else had this problem? I also have awful gas, burping so much. Thanks.

I was taking Urocit-K as well to prevent stone formation. My gastrointestinal upset was severe. I suffered from frequent stomach problems and from the very first dose developed loose stool which rapidly developed into chronic diarrhoea. I couldn't eliminate my stomach problems and had to go off the Urocit-K. Unfortunately for many stone sufferers, the side effects of Urocit-K are severe and make taking the medication impossible. Good luck and I hope you can find an alternate medication to help in your stone prevention. Have you now or ever taken allopurinol? It almost never causes side effects in those taking it and reduces uric acid levels very effectively. It's both used to prevent stones and gout, both with great success...

Thank you, John. I have not tried allupurinol. I am going to see my urologist to talk about an alternative. It's hard because the lemonade must have also killed my stomach. Now I am going to try Zantac for a week or so to see if I can get rid of this irritation, and that will not help as far as stone prevention! So, I'll just keep drinking water, more than usual, so nothing can crystallize.
