Solitary kidney - Kidney Disorders Message Board

I have recently found out that I was born with ONE kidney, yes, even after all of the CT scans, MRIs and so on. The worst part was that my gyno dr was the only doctor who told me about it and I know my past doctors HAD to have noticed it.

The condition, medically, is called "Unilateral Renal Agenesis", occurring in 1 out of 2000 people, BUT my particular condition (being born with only the right kidney) is about 1 in 5000.

Since finding out about my one kidney, I have made major changes in lifestyle; I’m vegetarian, exercise more, watch my diet (almost no sodium) and other changes.

Anyways, does anyone have this condition? Any tips as to how to stay healthy? I have NO possible kidney matches and would like to stay as healthy as possible.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the condition, but I do know 2 folks in their 60s who only have one kidney, and they are fine. It sounds like you are being really pro-active in looking after yourself. Keep up the good work.

If the one kidney you have is in good working order, and doing what it's supposed to do - I wouldn't worry too much. However, if you feel unsure, and can't stop worrying, you could always ask your doctor to do relevant lab work just to make sure all's ok and to give you peace of mind. You don't have to have just ''one'' kidney in order to have kidney probs

If your one kidney is functioning normally (as it probably has been doing your whole life), then it's just doing the work of ''two'' kidneys, which is normal. Don't worry!!
