Question Do kidneys do most of their work at night time?

I've heard that the kidneys do most of their work at night time. That unless you have several hours of sleep in the night your kidneys won't be able to function properly.

I've been trying to find if this is true but heard no other mention of it.

If it is true, how does this effect people who only work night shift or sleep a polyphasic schedule?

Re: Do kidneys do most of their work at night time?

I have never heard that and from a biological point of view it doesn't make sense either. You produce urine during the day too. When you are at rest it is probably a bit easier for the kidney to work, but they work 24/7. I know that for the liver it is best to take cholesterol lowering meds at night because the liver tends to raise cholesterol overnight. But kidneys tend to work at a steady pace.

Re: Do kidneys do most of their work at night time?

just wanted to put a big old DITTO on what corvah stated. your kidneys are a 24/7 filtering and getting rid of toxins/waste products machine that never ever stops. if they did, things would not run real smoothly in our bodies. while our metabolism does tend to slow a bit while we are sleeping, it is an overall body thing and NOT just with any particular organ. i don't know where you heard that one, but it is NOT true, K? marcia
