Salt or No Salt

Went to instacare last October because my blood pressure was way high (210/110) and was put on blood pressure meds (lisinopril and Maxide). Had my kidney function checked and it showed that it was above normal (creatinine 1.6) it is a full point jump from six months earlier at 0.5. I am told to cut out salt and to watch my diet and to drink more water. Am seeing a nephrologist now and my last bloodwork showed my salt levels are too low but because I started to drink more water I got my creatinine level down to 1.3. I drink between one and two 32 oz. bottles of water and a little more with meals. I have cut back on salt but not cut it out completely because I like it so much.

Not sure what to do here. Do I increase my salt intake? Or cut back on the water? I think drinking more water has really helped my kidneys plus I like the difference I see in my skin. Is it o.k. to have salt if my levels are low?

Re: Salt or No Salt

Keeping hydrated is good. I found that lemon juice is a great substitute for salt. Eating a lower sodium diet is helpful for kidney probs. Keeping your blood pressure under good control is also very important for kidney probs.

You should perhaps ask your neph re drinking more (or less) water.
