can slightly abnormal kidneys cause you to feel like urinating more?

hi everyone

this is my first post on this board so here it goes....

for the last 7/8 weeks ive been getting the feeling that i need to go to the toilet a lot more than i used to...

i had a urine culture done(sent to lab) and 2 blood tests to check my kidneys were working properly. urine test was fine but on both blood tests it showed a bit dehydration and my kidneys were slightly abnormal. there was no pain associated with the lower back area at first but only recently ive had one dull ache at almost the bottom of my back which lasted for 10 secs then went and also been having some mild pain in both of my sides but not every day.

my DR decided to send me to a nephrologist 1st who i see tomorrow to check kidneys are working as they should etc, getting an ultrasound done..

ive been looking into this quite a lot and i believe i may have damaged my own kidneys somewhat by drinking ridiculous amounts of water but im looking forward to any ideas you guys have first... below is the past 4/5 months of my fluid intake taking into an account my job is sitting at a desk all day....

it started off with:-

1 glass of water with breakfast
3 500ml bottled water during day at work (mostly drinking this when not eating at same time)

soon as i got in from work was having a 300ml glass of water, finished that within 30 mins, then waited another 30 mins and had another glass, then had another glass with another meal then a glass with me when i went to bed..

this continued and i just thought i could never have too much water and was drinking it for the sake of it between meals etc.. however i then started using a 700ml sports jug and a 400ml glass, i kept on having my normal glass with breakfast then the 3 bottles during the day then after work i would fill up the 400ml glass 3/4 times a night and then fill up the sports jug twice a night as well as having a 300ml glass of milk i used with protein powders.

its like ive been having almost close to or over 4 litres of fluid a day (most times drinking it inbetween meals) i continued this for 4/5 months before symptoms started and im worried because this showed on my blood test whether it has spread to other parts of urinary tract...

guess my question is have i done this because of drinking too much water and can my kidneys go back to normal?

thanks in advance

Re: can slightly abnormal kidneys cause you to feel like urinating more?

I'm NOT an expert on the matter. But surely being well hydrated (as you certainly seem to have been) can only HELP your kidneys, rather than hurting them. Kind of strange then that your lab test showed 'dehydration'.

Perhaps you could post the results of your kidney function lab tests on the board?

Anyway, let us know what your nephrologist had to say.

Best of luck,

monte

hi monte, thanks for the reply. not long back from hospital

finally i got to actually see my blood test results !

GFR was 67 but he mentioned nothing about that (although thats not very good is it?) my creatinine was 126 and he said it should be in the 100-110 range !!

past 4/5 months ive been putting away 4.5 litres of water each day including protein shakes with milk and protein bars on top of that..he said i need to cut down on fluids a bit and protein supplements

then checked my urine and no infections or anything found but he said they need to examine it further and they took 6 tubes of blood from me to test.

blood pressure was checked a few times, little bit on the high side but he thinks that is just cos i was in the hospital ' environment ' made me feel like that,

if anything comes back from that what is urgent he will call me in for a scan, if not my next appointment is 20th dec for the ultrasound.

on the plus side my specialist is australian, a really nice bloke as well, made everything that more easy to explain my concerns !
