hi my gfr has went from 59,56,to 51 in the past yr. everything I read on the national kidney foundation says this indicates stage3 kidney disease because of the dropping each time its tested. any thoughts or comments? thanx so much
While those numbers do indicate a problem, you are not in dire straits yet. Part of it could also be simply due to dehydration when you had your labs done. Always be sure to drink a lot the day before and keep this up consistently for labwork.
There are things you can do to help maintain kidney function. This includes glucose control if you have diabetes, bp control, and cutting back on salt and animal protein. Hopefully you will have spoken with a specialist (nephrologist) and the team can give you an idea of what other things you can do which may include some low dose bp meds even if your bp is normal.
While there definitely is a downward trend, the dehydration (if there is any) could make it look worse than it actually is. You don't say how old you are. There is typically a drop in kidney function with age too but this typically won't hit until 60s or 70s.
