Kidney stones or something else?

The first time this happened I was 19yrs old. So I have had two "kidney stones" in two years. The first time my lower back ached for hours then sharp pain in the lower right quadrant, the pain was so intense I threw up several times. I went to the doctor after a few hours of this and he told me that it was a kidney stone, gave me pain and nausea medicine and sent me home. I was also just finishing up my period when this happened. (IDK if that matters but thought I would add it) I never had any pain after that day and did not take more than one dose of the medicine. Nothing ever came out unless it was so tiny I didn't feel anything. I was referred to a specialist who ordered a CT and ultrasound, needless to say they showed nothing. A year later I felt like I was cramping although I had just finished having my period a few days earlier, and then a sudden sharp stabbing pain entered on the lower right quadrant again. I went to the doctor with in about 30 min this time and the pain was so intense I could not move or get out of the car but as soon as we parked the car the pain just disappeared. I went into the doctors and he did the same urine test as last time and concluded I had a kidney stone. This time he gave me a strainer thing to see when it passed... nothing ever came out and no pain. That was over a year ago. A couple of months ago I had a pain in the same area only duller this time and I didn't go to the doctor because I lost my insurance and it went away by the end of the day. I am just wondering was this a misdiagnosis and something else is going on or what? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Re: Kidney stones or something else?

Hi there! I started getting kidney stones when I was 16. What you have experienced sounds exactly like what I went through. I had the same problem you had where I wasn't able to catch the stone. I finally caught my 5th stone years later. But, my stones have, so far, passed very quickly, in only 1 day. So it is quite possible that they may happen. I also had my pain go away once while waiting in the ER. A CT scan luckily showed the stone so I didn't look crazy! I would say if they pass quickly you are lucky because many people have them for days or even weeks. Keep your pain pills around, because now you know what it feels like right before the pain starts and next time you can take the pill before the pain becomes excruciating. Also try to avoid soda and drink more water. Now, when this happens do you feel like you need to pee but can't? That is also a tell tale sign. I get severe pain in that same general area near my period, but it's from benign ovarian cysts that are normal and generally do not need to be worried about. You could read more information about that online though. Either way it's always good to stay on top of your health. The urine test is because there will be blood in your urine if you have a kidney stone, however this can be deceitful near your period because that's where the blood could potentially be coming from.
