JJ stents alternatives?
For two years my husband fought fevers, listlessness, and back pain. It was finally determined his left kidney was blocked. He was born with Charcot-Marie tooth syndrome and scoliosis, that resulted in an ostomy as a child. His health, up until now, at age 56, was good. Our concern was getting rid of the infections and getting him off of the antibiotics. We had no clue what we were in for.! They put a JJ stent in. After 1 + year his stent still clogs after 3 to 6 weeks. We are alerted because he gets fevers, and is listless. To change the stent costs between $2500 and $4500 each time. He still has to do the antibiotic regiment each time. It feels like he has gained nothing, and we wonder how long he can go on like this. Our only hope to our knowledge is a stem cell regrowth of the tube. We know this has been done successfully, but can find no-one currently doing this. The doctors do not want to use the only other major surgery alternative, which is taking part of his intestine and using that for a ureter tube. They do not feel he is a good candidate for this and it would be too risky.
Though replacing the stent is fairly quick and simple, the cost, the trying to plan your life around when he may or may not need a replacement is difficult. Anyone out there know where we can get a stem cell replacement or have any other suggestions???
