kidney dead, other with

Hello, five years ago there was nothing wrong with me, but then I had breast cancer - 1mm and underwent several horrible operations to remove the cancer, and then to remove recurrence risks. I was also on medications that did more harm to me than good, and now it has been discovered that one of my kidneys is dead and the other one is compensating for the atrophic kidney but has a distended renal pelvis. The doctors think its juncional sydrome and congenital, but what I dont understand is that it was a year ago at the age of 51 that it was discovered, surely if I had always had this problem congenitally, it would have been noticed during my abdomenal scans whilst pregnant, or whilst having scans there to check for cancer. Now I have to have the atrophic kidney removed and the other kidney has to have a double j stent put in after having cut out the junctional syndrome abnomality. Is there anyone out there with a similar situation? Thankyou.
