| Levofloxacin 500 and igA nephropathy
I have possible igA nephropathy. We've been tracking it for several years now and my kidney function is almost normal, but I've proteinuria and haematuria and we've eliminated all the other possibles. I'm on ACE inhibitors to try to control my slightly elevated BP, and to control the protein a bit.
HOWEVER, I'm going through a bout of bronchitis which is proving resistant to amoxicillin. The ENT has prescribed a ten day course of levofloxacin to try to ail it. I'm on 1x500mg tablet a day.
Reading around the topic shows me several examples of people with far worse renal function than me going onto levo, and the primary concern not being further kidney damage but rather things like tendon injury.
So question, does this scream "utter madness, stop now!". Or is it more a matter of, "well it depends" and "given the almost normal renal function the cost-benefit tradeoff is probably worth it"?
I'd phone my nephrologist for advice but at the rate those guys get back to me, I could have moved onto full blown pneumonia before I hear from them :-)
