Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Wow AuntNanc you had a very frustrating day :-( I am so sorry. Have you considered going to the Mayo Clinic? I know it is quite a distance, but at least you would not only have a urologist that certainly would be better than what you had today, but they would also have a thrombosis specialist. That was going to be my next stop if I didnt get satisfaction today. I wish I could have the surgery sooner than January but between my husband's surgery in November and the holidays, it just wasnt going to work out. Otherwise if you are willing to travel to Indianapolis, I would gladly give you my drs name. His assistant says he does at least 300 of these surgeries a year and is one of the best. Good Luck and keep me posted.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Thanks, stoneyburke. I'll keep that in mind as a back up. I'm giving myself a day to not think about it. Tomorrow I'll get on the phone to the thrombosis specialist (in Pittsburgh) and see if she'll agree to helping me without a second appointment. Hang in there! You, too, jamie 5538. Eventually, things will get better. ;-)

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi jamie5538 and stoneyburke. Just wondering how everyone is doing as you wait. I was more than a little stressed after seeing the surgeon in Hershey last month. So I waited till I saw my local urologist last week and, after talking everything over with him, I feel much better. My thrombosis specialist in Pittsburgh is sending my file to the Hershey hematology dept and they will deal there with my clotting issues. But, since It's been more than a year since my last labs, they'll probably want to redo them all. So I'm waiting to see how soon they'll see me. Then it will be about eight weeks before I can see the surgeon again and schedule my surgery. I have no idea why it takes that long. But what do I know? Anyway, I imagine that will put me well into January for my surgery. Hopefully, by then, you'll both be recovering and you can tell me all about it! Hang in there, all.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi AuntNanc

Im doing fine. For the most part I still dont have pain. A twinge every once in a while and of course I feel like I have to urinate all the time. Dr has me on a low dose antibiotic because I had an infection. Im thinking that infection is not going anywhere but its liveable. My husband has his surgery next week so am more focused on that. I sure hope you can get your surgery done sooner but know that it doesnt seem like they move very fast for these stones. I had to have lab work done and received the results today. Dont understand what the results say, I will have to start looking up the lingo and see if I can figure it out. Other than that I will just have to wait until January. Anxious to hear what Jamie5538 has to say. Take care AuntNanc and keep us posted. I think about you & Jamie5538 a lot.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Sorry you both are dealing with so much with the kidney stones.

I had PCNL about 10 years ago and maybe it is better now as I found it painful. For the 3CM size stone, PCNL sounds the best option.

I have had all three; PCNL, Lithotripsy, & Ureterscopy.

The ureterscopy has better change of getting stones than lithotripsy but is more uncomfortable afterward. But pain meds can help after this. Ureterscopy doesn't work if stones are at very bottom of kidney as mine tend to be.

I hope you both have your stones tested to see what kind they are to see if changing diet can help. Plus have thryoid tested as there is a disorder that causes kidney stones.

With stones there is always the wait to see if they will pass (for smaller ones) or if not causing issues such as blockage.

For any procedure- even litho - they make you stop taking all meds (prescription, over counter, herbs, vitamins) two weeks before. Usually can only take Tylenol or specific prescriptions if they know about them.

I really hope your procedures help.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi Nora01

Thanks so much for the information. Im hoping they have made improvements since you had your procedure done but probably not. I figure I will be in pain afterwards but they didnt give me another option. Hopefully the pain wont last long. My dr did say they would run tests on the stones to try to figure out what is causing them. That would be good to know :-) Thanks again for letting the three of us know what to expect. Take care.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi AuntNanc & Jamie5538

Just wanted to let you know that I have my PCNL tomorrow. Will be in the hospital until Tuesday or Wednesday. Once I am up to it, I will post and let you know what to expect. Do either of you have dates for your procedures yet? I think about you often and pray that you both are doing good and not in too much pain. Take care.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi! I was supposed to have mine at the end of this month. Surgeons were going to do two surgeries during one hospital stay because I was also recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer. But, alas, it turns out I can't have the PCNL after all. I ended up in Pittsburgh and surgeon there said, with my clotting disorder and having to go back on my anticoagulants too soon after surgery, there is too high a risk of bleeding for me. So, for now, I'm scheduled to get the thyroid out on the 25th and we'll figure out what to do with the stone later. Fortunately, it's not giving me much trouble, so have time to wait.

I've been wondering how you're doing and am so glad you're finally getting your turn. Will be praying for you and am looking forward to hearing how it went and that you're doing well. Hang in there!

AuntNanc

Hi nora01. I just saw your post about a thyroid disorder that causes kidney stones. Anything else you can tell me about that? While waiting to schedule my PCNL last fall, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I'll be having my thyroid removed on the 25th and would love to discover it was somehow the cause of my stones. Because of a clotting disorder, I've learned there's too much risk of bleeding for me to have the PCNL. I would have to go back on my anticoagulants too soon.

My surgeon told me that with the ureteroscopy, there is only a 20% chance of getting the whole 1.8cm stone with one shot. May I ask, how successful was yours? Thanks.

Aunt Nanc

Oh AuntNanc I am so sorry to hear about your thyroid cancer. Will you have to have radiation after your surgery? These golden years sometimes aren't so golden!! Take care. Will certainly be praying for you!

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi Nanc
Sorry to hear about your cancer. I hope all goes well with the surgery.

The thyroid disorder that can cause kidney stones is hyperparathyroidism.. Its where the thyroid secrets too much hormone. If you are seeing specialist for thyroid, you could ask more about it. I had too blood test to check mine between an 8 year period just to see if I had this but I did not. My stone issues are genetic on my fathers side.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, so I'm not likely to have this as well. But it's worth asking. Wouldn't it be great to know that, once my thyroid was gone, no more stones?! Ha. What seems too good to be true, usually is. Thanks for the info.
