Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

We don't really have family here, but the one of the reasons I picked to Hospital 2.5 hours away is my sister lives about 45mins away from that hospital, so her and her husband will be able to help with the kids on the weekends. So that will be helpful we also have met some great people here where we live and they have offerd to help us too. As for the pain it is manageable for now as long as I don't get another infection, I can't call the Doctor today due to the holliday, but will tomorrow and find out if she knows anything and about the antibiotics too. Thank you so much for caring about me and my family!!

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Sorry to hear about your husband. Will keep you both in prayer. I'm just heading out the door to drive the first two hours and will stay with my sister-in-law tonight. Will make for a much shorter drive in the morning since I wasn't able to reschedule for later in the day. Like you, I just want it over with. Found out last week I have a small cataract on each eye, so have scheduled surgeries for those, as well, next month. I swear, I'm falling apart before my very eyes...no pun intended. ;-) So, good luck with your appointment. Safe travels.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

How did you turn out AuntNanc? I am scheduled for surgery on January 7th. Soonest I could get in! They are going to do both kidneys as the right also has a stone too big to pass on its own. Said I would be in hospital 1-4 days. Will get out after 1 day if no fragments left in kidneys. If there are fragments they will go back in on day 3 and I will get out day 4. The good news is that he said NO STENTS!!!! So excited about that because I didnt do well with the stent last time. So back to a waiting game for me, but at least I know it will be over beginning of January. Hope you turned out as good. Let me know.

Please let me know how you turn out and I will do the same. Things have changed a little for me - my husband found out he had a cyst between his 4th & 5th vertebrae and is scheduled for surgery on Nov 9th so will probably have to delay my surgery until the beginning of the year. Will just have to wait and see what the dr says. Anyway have a safe trip and good luck!
Hope your appointment went better than mine. I had to see a resident first and was beginning to think I wouldn't get past him to even see the doctor. Both seemed pretty freaked out about having to deal with my clotting disorder as part of the mix since I take blood thinners and am at risk when I have to be off them for surgeries and such. The doctor told me the PCNL procedure would be just as risky for bleeding, if not more so, than the Lithotripsy. He thought it would be safer for me to have a procedure where they go up through the bladder because there would be no incisions, but said it would require at least two or more surgeries to get the whole stone. He totally ignored the fact that there are alternate meds I can take while off my blood thinners to lessen the risk. I reminded him that I live three hours away and that it just wasn't possible to expect my family members to take off work multiple times to get me to and from the hospital for who knows how many surgeries and procedures. Then he decided that, since I was not having ongoing infections or major pain, there really was no reason to do anything at all just now! Like it's not going to keep getting larger while I'm ignoring it??? So he finally said I should contact a thrombosis specialist I saw last year, tell her what my options are and ask her what she recommends and have her write out a list, making it "stupid dumb" easy to follow, that breaks down day by day exactly how and when they should stop my blood thinners, what replacement meds to give, how much and when. Really?? I was on my way home within 45 minutes of my appointment time thoroughly frustrated. So, at this point, I have no idea what I'll end up having or not having, and when.

So, how did it go for you? Better, I hope.

Hi stoneyburke. Looks like you were leaving your response as I was writing mine. Sure glad your appointment went so well and you're seeing that light at the end of the tunnel. I'm still hoping for a resolution before the end of the year, but not holding out much hope, given result of today's appointment. Keep me posted on how things go for you!

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Wow AuntNanc you had a very frustrating day :-( I am so sorry. Have you considered going to the Mayo Clinic? I know it is quite a distance, but at least you would not only have a urologist that certainly would be better than what you had today, but they would also have a thrombosis specialist. That was going to be my next stop if I didnt get satisfaction today. I wish I could have the surgery sooner than January but between my husband's surgery in November and the holidays, it just wasnt going to work out. Otherwise if you are willing to travel to Indianapolis, I would gladly give you my drs name. His assistant says he does at least 300 of these surgeries a year and is one of the best. Good Luck and keep me posted.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Thanks, stoneyburke. I'll keep that in mind as a back up. I'm giving myself a day to not think about it. Tomorrow I'll get on the phone to the thrombosis specialist (in Pittsburgh) and see if she'll agree to helping me without a second appointment. Hang in there! You, too, jamie 5538. Eventually, things will get better. ;-)

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi jamie5538 and stoneyburke. Just wondering how everyone is doing as you wait. I was more than a little stressed after seeing the surgeon in Hershey last month. So I waited till I saw my local urologist last week and, after talking everything over with him, I feel much better. My thrombosis specialist in Pittsburgh is sending my file to the Hershey hematology dept and they will deal there with my clotting issues. But, since It's been more than a year since my last labs, they'll probably want to redo them all. So I'm waiting to see how soon they'll see me. Then it will be about eight weeks before I can see the surgeon again and schedule my surgery. I have no idea why it takes that long. But what do I know? Anyway, I imagine that will put me well into January for my surgery. Hopefully, by then, you'll both be recovering and you can tell me all about it! Hang in there, all.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi AuntNanc

Im doing fine. For the most part I still dont have pain. A twinge every once in a while and of course I feel like I have to urinate all the time. Dr has me on a low dose antibiotic because I had an infection. Im thinking that infection is not going anywhere but its liveable. My husband has his surgery next week so am more focused on that. I sure hope you can get your surgery done sooner but know that it doesnt seem like they move very fast for these stones. I had to have lab work done and received the results today. Dont understand what the results say, I will have to start looking up the lingo and see if I can figure it out. Other than that I will just have to wait until January. Anxious to hear what Jamie5538 has to say. Take care AuntNanc and keep us posted. I think about you & Jamie5538 a lot.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Sorry you both are dealing with so much with the kidney stones.

I had PCNL about 10 years ago and maybe it is better now as I found it painful. For the 3CM size stone, PCNL sounds the best option.

I have had all three; PCNL, Lithotripsy, & Ureterscopy.

The ureterscopy has better change of getting stones than lithotripsy but is more uncomfortable afterward. But pain meds can help after this. Ureterscopy doesn't work if stones are at very bottom of kidney as mine tend to be.

I hope you both have your stones tested to see what kind they are to see if changing diet can help. Plus have thryoid tested as there is a disorder that causes kidney stones.

With stones there is always the wait to see if they will pass (for smaller ones) or if not causing issues such as blockage.

For any procedure- even litho - they make you stop taking all meds (prescription, over counter, herbs, vitamins) two weeks before. Usually can only take Tylenol or specific prescriptions if they know about them.

I really hope your procedures help.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi Nora01

Thanks so much for the information. Im hoping they have made improvements since you had your procedure done but probably not. I figure I will be in pain afterwards but they didnt give me another option. Hopefully the pain wont last long. My dr did say they would run tests on the stones to try to figure out what is causing them. That would be good to know :-) Thanks again for letting the three of us know what to expect. Take care.

Re: Perc Neph (PCNL) Procedure For Kidney Stones??

Hi AuntNanc & Jamie5538

Just wanted to let you know that I have my PCNL tomorrow. Will be in the hospital until Tuesday or Wednesday. Once I am up to it, I will post and let you know what to expect. Do either of you have dates for your procedures yet? I think about you often and pray that you both are doing good and not in too much pain. Take care.
