UTI and Kidney Stones

I have a history of kidney stones because of having hyperparathyroidism. I've had surgery on both sides to remove stones and lithotripsy externally to break up stones. I've the two parathyroids on the left removed. My endocrinologist told me that all four parathyroids are enlarged. My calcium levels have been going up again.

The pain started in my left kidney on Thursday. It was worse in the morning but was better later on with only a dull ache the rest of the day. Friday morning the pain began and never let up. I took Tylenol with codeine which did nothing. I went to the ER where they did an ultrasound of my kidneys, ureters and bladder and also an x-ray. My urine shows I have an infection and the doctor also said that I have stones. I was put on a three day dose of antibiotics and some Naproxen for pain and inflammation. The pain has since moved to both kidneys! I know that the last kidney stone fragment that was removed during surgery was too small to be seen on an x-ray. The antibiotic is really strong so hopefully it clear up the infection.

Can kidney stones that are still in the kidney cause an infection?

Re: UTI and Kidney Stones

The antibiotic doesn't seem to be working at all. I only have two more doses left. I actually feel worse. Dizzy, weak, feverish. Naproxen helps some but not enough. Shouldn't the antibiotic be doing something? Maybe the pain is also from the kidney stones on the left side.

Re: UTI and Kidney Stones

I went back to the ER today because the antibiotic(sulfatrim) was gone and the pain was becoming worse. The infection is still there. The ER doctor says it's bladder because the ct of the kindeys, bladder, ureter showed no distention. But my pain is around my kidney. I took one dose of the antibiotic, two tylenol 3 and another dose of naproxen. The new antibiotic is cipro. I feel nauseous, have the chills, diarrhea. Could the infection be causing all of this? Could the kidney stone be causing all of these symptoms?
