Getting on the floor.

Morning Everyone! I was wondering yesterday as I cleaned the bath tub how many of you get on the floor for various reasons? How do you get up? Do you feel any pain/pressure/discomfort of any sort in your THR hip area?

I ask because I find that I don't get on the floor as often as I use to. I'll get on knees to clean the bath tub and possibly dust in a very low hard to reach place. But sometimes getting up can be a challange. In the bathroom I make sure I grab the sink with one hand, the towel bar with the other and push up with the good leg (which will need replacing in the future). I do somethimes feel pressure in that new hip area and was wondering....should I even be doing this????? In the livingroom I make sure I "knee walk" over to the couch and grab the arm with one hand and the arm of a hip chair with the other hand to pull up with.

What do you all do?

Re: Getting on the floor.

Linda, I've tried getting up off the floor only a couple of times. Both my husband and I wanted to see if I could do it, if I had to, and he was close by both times in case I needed help. I did it pretty much the way you do and did make it on my own. Certainly not something one would want to do with an audience (other than family) though! LOL When getting into bed, is it the operated hip that you have to put in first? It is with me, and it really doesn't bother me too much. I haven't tried it from the other side, but maybe that would be harder. I understand just what you are saying about lifting that leg being harder sometimes than others. Getting into the car on the passenger side is quite variable. Sometimes I do great and others it's a real challenge and I actually have to take my hand and help that leg up high enough to clear the door frame.

Re: Getting on the floor.

Hi Anne - but when you get up from the floor do you feel any pressure or discomfort? I do.

Getting into bed is much easier when the THR leg goes in first. Unfortunately my side of the bed is the "other" side. While I recuperated DH switched sides with me. But I really like my own side better. And you're right...when you go in with the THR leg first it's not bad. However, going in "good leg" first is another story all together.

Re: Getting on the floor.

Linda--Yes, I feel both pressure and discomfort when getting up from the floor. However, I feel these things with just about everything I do! Sometimes it's better than other times, though, and I can't find any particular explanation for this. Also, some days can be going really well and then go "bad" for no particular reason........or maybe I just did too much while I was feeling good??

I just tried getting onto the bed "good leg" first, and didn't notice much difference. Maybe it's all in how one gets in, or the height of the bed??

Re: Getting on the floor.

Anne -I definately think the height of the bed, step, etc. plays a very big roll in that pain we get. For example when I get onto the couch good side first the pressure isn't half as much as say into my bed. My bed is on the high side. As a rule I have no pain when I do normal activities. Just that darn leg lift issue and an occasional 'ache' if I've over done things. Oh...one more question while we're here. Do you ever get an ache in the buttock area of the leg where you've had the THR? The other day my "butt" hurt!! Only for a short time but something that made me take notice. Have a good afternoon...

Re: Getting on the floor.

Hi everybody. I've been busy with the grandgirlies and haven't had time to post for awhile. As far as getting up off the floor goes, that was one of the most awkward things for me after THR. Even getting down to the floor wasn't that easy. I really didn't have pain, but I felt so stiff and old, not limber like I used to be. It's still not all that comfortable for me getting up and down, but it is easier now. I'm on the floor a lot with the girls, so I try to look as non-chalant as possible and get myself into a comfortable position. I'm glad to be back on line and will post as regularly as possible. Talk to you all later...balleteach

Re: Getting on the floor.

Interesting question... I don't get the 'butt' hurt but I do get the upper thigh on the side to feel tingly and cold (I think it's the bone healing).

I don't have any problem getting down and up again. I get onto the floor all the time for karate or other exercise classes. It was difficult at first but it gets better with time. I kneel on my THR knee and push off with the other leg. It feels funny to stretch beyond the 90 degrees (I know I shouldn't be doing that). But, I don't feel like it will pop out or have any problems. I'm surprised that you are still having problems with this... I have other problems but not that one...

What do others do?

Re: Getting on the floor.

I will kneel on the THR knee and push up also with the other leg also. But as I do that I get that horrible pulling sensation that I've been complaining about. Some days it's more pronounced than others. But to say I get up off the floor without any discomfort.....nope.
