Pain after 11months

Hi

Can anyone help me please. My 86yr old mother had a partial hip replacement, due to a fall, over 11months ago and she is still experiencing quite a lot of pain at the top of her leg, where the incision is. She was a very sprightly lady, who could walk miles. Now she can bearly walk without a stick.

Could anyone comment on this please. Is it the norm. By the way, she has been back to the hospital twice for x rays and everything seems normal. She is also one of those people who has a high pain thresh-hold and doesn't complain unless she is in a lot of pain. Could this be muscle pain?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: Pain after 11months

Yaris-- Is your mother's pain at the actual incision site, or across the top of the leg where it bends when seated---sort of from the incision toward the groin? If this is the case, then it sounds like what I feel. I wonder if this has something to do with it being just a partial replacement. You are the only one, other than me, that has posted regarding a partial replacement. These must be done mainly because of injury, whereas the THR's are done because of arthritis.

Re: Pain after 11months

Hi Anne

Mom complains of both pain in her incision and also across the top of her leg where it bends, when seated. I sometimes feel no-one is really listening to her. She takes the obvious medication, co-codamol and was, at one time, taking morphine. As I have already said, she isn't one to complain about pain. Perhaps it may have been better if she had had a full hip replacement bearing in mind she suffers badly with arthritis. She is really missing not being able to go shopping as she cannot walk very far at all. It does seem a long process, but then I suppose major surgery takes time - I should know, I am 17months postop from a hysterectomy.

By the way, how many weeks/months postop are you.

Re: Pain after 11months

My mother broke her hip 9 months ago. She did not it replaced. She complains of the same pain every day. She cannot bend the affected leg towards her.

Re: Pain after 11months

Hi
I had a PHR in April, it was an emergency operation as I fractured my hip and thought I was dealing with Sciatic for about one week before being x-rayed. I have had Rhematoid Arthritis for 27 years, since my early 20's. I had cysts on my hip caused by the arthritis that weakend my hip. I did not know they were there because I never had pain in my hips at all. I was doing physio for my knees, as I have had both knees replaced (Feb 04 and Oct 04) The only pain I feel now is probably muscle pain, as I feel it most when bend or stretch to far.
I have followed this site since my operation. I have found all the info helpful and have not felt my experience with a PHR was much different than those who had THR. I do still have some quick sharp pains in the incision area, but I think they will go away as I heal.
I have posted here in the past about my PHR. Check the 6 months after thread there is alot of valuable information there.
Yaris - I hope you mom gets her pain under control soon. It is horrible to live in constant pain.
