Does the cold affect your hips? - Knee & Hip Problems Message Board

Hi Everyone,

Curious about the affects the cold is having on others new hips. We are in a nasty sub zero snap right now. I also have been having more pain than usual. I ache in my upper thighs and my joints are more painful to some moves. I was not even able to ride Monday or today! I thought perhaps I had pulled something when I took the header on skis thanks to DH, but now I am wondering if the cold is causing some of this discomfort.

I also have heard that this is more likely to occur in the first year or so following surgery and may improve with time. Anyone have any thoughts??

Yes, I very definitely have more discomfort, pain, and stiffness, when I get cold. I've found that even though I may not feel cold, I do much better if I put a warm afghan over my hips, on top of the other covers, at night. I experience just what you describe. This is also affected by changes (in either direction) of the barometric pressure, which goes along with storms and cold snaps. I hope this will improve as time goes on!

Hi to all my Hippie friends. I've been so busy with preparations for Christmas that I've gotten behind in my posting. Getting everything ready for the grandgirlies is a lot of fun. The family is moving right after New Years so things are more hectic then usual. The property that my daughter is moving to has a stream where you can still pan for gold. The gold country area of the Sierra foothills is very beautiful. I'm hoping I can persuade my husband to move. It's about 40-45min from our house. Maybe if he strikes it rich, he'll head for the hills!!
As far as cold weather affecting THR, I don't especially notice any extra discomfort. I do remember thigh pain for the first year or so after the surgery. I feel like my whole body is more stiff, achy, and uncomfortable with the cold weather. Around Oct- Nov I notice the change, then by spring I start to feel physically more healthy. I definitely like the warmer weather and feel much healthier and limber. This summer with all the swimming, I did feel much better. For exercise, I try to go walking everyday, if possible. There is no way this California girl could ever live back east, brrr! Oct 2003, I had a condition develop called costochondritis. Everyone is probably going costo what? It's a very painful condition of the breastbone and ribcage where the cartilage
is inflamed, the ribs are sore to the touch, and it becomes painful to take a deep breath. I went to the emergency room at first thinking I had heart problems. After a complete work-up., they ruled everything else out and ended up with this diagnosis. It's like arthritis in the joints only it's in the cartilage of the ribs. Costo can be chronic or a one time thing that goes away. Mine is in between. I'll go for a long time fine then have a flare-up for a few days or longer. Too much strenous activity or lifting can bring it on or a viral infection. Cold weather aggravates the condition, so winter is usually the most uncomfortable. Actually, my THR has been no trouble compared to dealing with costo. Of course, lugging around the grandgirlies doesn't help!! At least so far, the rest of me is pretty darn healthy according to the dr. When your young you take your health for granted, but at 61 yrs old, I feel very aware of the passage of time and I'm so very thankful for good health . Well my friends, that's about it for now.
