| Re: Looking at replacing the other now1
although the birmingham is a relatively new procedure, it is 10-15 years old now, so it has been around a fair bit - and very successfully for the vast majority of recipients, myself included.
i have 2 birmingham hips, done 10 months apart, about 3/4 years ago. the scar is longer than a thr, and the non-weight bearing period is longer too, to allow the bone to grow into the ceramic liner to secure it. but apart from that, mine are great. i occasionally get pain in my left groin area, which i've been told is the tendons, but it only happens when i sit in a particular position. and an occasional ache round the scar area on the right side.
two weeks ago i walked almost to the top of snowdon, the highest mountain in wales so that gives you some idea of what's possible. and i'm sure there are people out there who could tell you of much greater achievements than that!!
i have no idea about the 'mix and match' thing so can't really comment on that. i'm 54. good luck.
