My son injured his knee playing football. Please need advice.

I need some advice whether this is a miniscus tear in my sons knee or not.
During the summer he was playing tackle football with some friends at a park and one boy dove at him and tackled him right in the knees.
Ever since he has had pain and achiness in his right knee.
Well he is 13 and just started strength and conditioning camp for football season this year.
They started out in the weightlifting room and coach had them doing duckwalks with 10 pound weights among other things.
They went out to the track to do sprints and I could tell his knee was bothering him by the look on his face but he was brave and said he was fine.
Well he took off on the first sprint and couldn't do it.
We took him to our chiropractor who said from his experience it feels like a soft tissue injury and isn't totally sure but he doubts it was a miniscus tear.
He said he can help him. He said his kneecap was out of place and adjusted that and did some acupunture for some fluid behind his kneecap and some electro shock therapy also.
When we got home I noticed the swelling had already gone down in his knee and he gave us one of the blue gel ice packs for his knee.
He is able to walk around much better but is still sore...thats understandable.
But he said he can still practice but don't aggrivate his knee any further.
What is he going to be able to do as far as the weighlifting and sprinting at practice to not aggravate his knee.
If it is a miniscus tear is his football career over? My son loves football and wants to go to college to play once high school is over but that is still a long way away.
I'm going to take him to his doctor and ask for an mri to tell for sure if it is the miniscus.
I've read on the internet most people who suffer a miniscus tear feel a popping noise or something but he says he doesn't feel anything like that.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Popping is common, but the feeling of the knee "locking up" is the most common symptom of a meniscus injury. And no, a meniscus injury does not necessarily end a football career. As a matter of fact, although they can be repaired (arthroscopically) often don't need to be. Ben Roethlesberger was actually playing again about a week and a half after his meniscus repair!
