Had Hip Replacement - Now Lower Back & Buttock Pain

Hello to all!

I have recently had hip replacement. I could not walk properly for 2 years prior to the surgery because of the pain in my hips.

Maybe I am expecting too much but I though after I had the hips replaced the pain would be gone completely.

Now it is hard to get up while laying on my back and I get these pains in my buttuck area/lower back like something is going on in there.

I am 8 weeks past surgery. Keep thinking I may have pain forever now because of damamge I may have done during the 2 years of not walking properly or walking too much, mostly sit down and lay down.

Has anyone experienced this type of situation?

Thanks to all who may respond.

Re: Had Hip Replacement - Now Lower Back & Buttock Pain

Roux my next door neighbor had this surgery two years ago and her recovery was rather slow. It took her a good 3 to 4 months to get back on her feet. She had alot of back pain with the recovery and told me how much using a plastic bag on her chairs and moving around in bed helped her. I hope this tip will help you if you are not already using it.

You might want to give your surgeon and a ring and talk to him about it just to make sure that nothing else is going on.

Good luck to you!!

Re: Had Hip Replacement - Now Lower Back & Buttock Pain

I had the same surgery about 3 months ago and have
the same issues - low back pain and serious glut muscle pain.
I also do a lot of walking and often wonder if my body is just
readjusting and using muscle differently then prior to the surgery.

I will be seeing my surgeon in a few weeks and ask about this as
well as asking if there are specific stretches or strengthening
exercises one can do given the restrictions after the hip surgery.
Will be happy to then pass the answers on to you although I keep hearing
"everyone is different".

Re: Had Hip Replacement - Now Lower Back & Buttock Pain

Thanks Paul!
I do not see my doctor until the first week in September, and I have wondered if it is just a re-adjustment. I welcome any information you may have from your doctor. I think I may be pushing it too fast based on some of the post I have read on this site. We have to give it some time, after all we did have major surgery

Re: Had Hip Replacement - Now Lower Back & Buttock Pain

It's been over two years since my partial hip replacement. I have the same pain that you describe. Since I am told that the hip is fine, and pain is on both sides, I am attributing it to arthritis.......or something like that. I do find that I need to keep my hips warm at night, even in summer. An extra afgan, over my hips, works nicely.
