Was taken to task for using a Mart Cart at Grocery Store

Well, my surgery is now 3 weeks away, and I cannot wait. I have an issue, though that is kind of directly related to this..in an indirect way. For the past few months, when I go to the grocery store, or shopping at one of those club stores, I have taken tu using one of the Mart Carts..the scooter. My husband finally talked me into it, as walking long distances was getting harder and harder for me.
Anyway, a few days ago I went to the grocery store, and as usual, got me a scooter to use. An older woman (I would say in her 70s) started having a fit because I was using the cart--because they are for "old people". Her words.
OK, she did not see me approaching the cart, using my cane, and walking slowly. But still..to assume I was just using it as a convenience and not from necessity kind of got to me. I mean, I even have a handicapped tag for my car.
I was pretty hurt by what she said, though I should not have been. I just motored off, and ignored her. I figured, SHE was the one embarassing herself by yelling and making a scene in public. My husnad thought I should have said something. He was not with me, but I am sure he would have spoken up if her were.
I guess I am just needed to vent here.

Re: Was taken to task for using a Mart Cart at Grocery Store

I am sorry for the old lady's ignorance. Yes, some people can only see what they see...tunnel vision. Just like people that park in handicapped spots don't LOOK handicapped so therefore it must be ok to yell at them too! Both my husband and myself have had to use those carts in the past and we both look able bodied however we were not at the time. I probably would of had to say something to the old lady but on the other hand she was the one making the scene and others understand you don't often see the disability. Aren't those carts just great for the times you can't get around those stores!

Thanks, Ann. Yes, the carts have been a great help to me. I have enjoyed the convenience, but will look forward to not needing one.

Hi Marie:

How absolutely unthinkable that anyone would criticise you for using one of those carts! I doubt that there is anyone who would use one just to save walking if they were not having problems walking. I think most people would be too proud to do that and give the impression they were not able to walk. I would have given that person a large piece of my mind! What nerve!

Re: Was taken to task for using a Mart Cart at Grocery Store

I've had to use those carts & it was only because I needed to shop & couldn't get around. I think you should have informed her in a pleasant tone that sometimes people have disabilities that aren't apparent. You could agree with her that sometimes those carts are used by people who don't need them.

Two people yelling & creating a scene doesn't get the message across as much as quietly saying what you need to say. At least this is what I've found that works. Fam
