Question Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

Anyone who can help, PLEASE DO! I really need to get back to work. I went to my Ortho Surgeon last fall, he said my Left Knee was really Bad, I told him NO, it was the Right one, at work I actually needed someone to walk across the parking lot with me at times to get to the time clock after work because I could feel my knees going out from under me and the severe pain. So September 13th he did Surgery on both knee's (STILL telling me the left was the worst). He only used a small hole on the inside and outside of each knee. It turned out the RIGHT knee was the worst. There was NO cartalige left, so he took a couple tools he called a chisel and hammer and drill, and gave me the pictures and showed me where he broke up the exposed bone so it would heal better. The Left knee didn't need much at all. I had a brace on the right knee for about 2 weeks before he removed it and we began PT on that one.
Now the Left Knee causes more pain, but is getting better, but both knee's are tender and I assume they always will be.
I can't get down to look under furnature at home or beds, I can't even bend the knee's enough to see all my DVD Collection.
If my knee's touch the floor, Chair, bed, pillow, anything at all OWWWWWWWW!!
I can't Squat down? Why Not???It's really painful! I can stand completely still and both knee's will buckle on me, no pain, nothing, just down I go unless I grab onto something.
It's been 4 months and I am suppose to be back at work by now, even by the Surgeon terms. So Whats up? I feel like a weakling.
I can't climb stairs to my daughters apartment and go up straight! I have to go up walking sideways, and come down, sideways. My knee's are too tight to bend enough to climb stairs straight up and down like I used too.
Before the surgery I could run up and down them, the severe Pain was walking on the flat surfaces. I did all I was supposed to do. Should I ask for MORE PT??? Or is it a problem with the Surgery??? I am a very active person.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!
PS: Maybe I should also mention hubby was NO HELP, I was home from the surgery and standing at the stove =walker & all cooking his dinner and serving him in his recliner. Now I look back I should of dumped it on him.

Gee, I hope you get help. The pain sounds awful. Can you go to another ortho? There definatly seems to be a major issue here.
Sorry I cannot be of more help, except to suggest you go to another doctor.

Marie,
Thank You for your post. I never thought about seeing another Ortho, Maybe I should, but I'm not sure another Ortho will see me so soon after surgery. Do you know what kind of Doctor handles the pinched nerves?
Thanks,
Stardust

As for who to see for the pinched nerves, I cannot say. Maybe you could ask your primary doctor for a suggestion? Seems like you should not be having this pain if all signs point to the knees being better.\
Wish I could help you more.

Re: Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

Stardust.....

I'm confused. Did you have total knee replacements on both....or just one?
I'm assuming you did on the knee with no (supposed) cartilage? The weakness could be from any number of things. You very well may need further PT to strengthen.

You also need to seek a second opinion. It's your body and it's your right to get 10 opinions....if that's what it takes....to resolve your situation.

Good luck,
Linda

Re: Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

Hi Linda,
No he didn't do any knee replacements, as I mentioned in the original post he just used a hammer, chisel and a drill and broke up the pink bone and said it would heal on it's own. I saw him today and there is a problem with the left knee joint,Everytime he touched it I fell off the table, thats how bad it hurts! I kept asking why can't I stoop down and pick things up yet, it's been 4 months and never did get an answer. He did say something about there being some fluid on the left knee, but he didn't say exactly where, however I had a spinal fusion 2 years ago in the s1-l5 and it slipped and had to be re-done 3 months later, the second time is when I ended up with a really bad pinched nerve and ever since have been on Fentanyl 50 patches and now on Oxycodone 10 twice a day for BT pain, but neither of them do anything.
He said today it's almost impossible to tell which is the problem because the sciatic nerve is dominating that hip and leg. He asked me about a steriod injection in my bad knee joint for now, which I finally agreed. and I have to go to my PM and get ESI's done in my Lumbar area, to try and get the inflammation down in my back (I haven't had those done in years) and then return so they can finally seperate the knee pain from the Spine pain.
He didn't give me a chance to mention the Electo-Reflexology someone had mentioned on here. And I couldn't get on here to get more information about it before my appt. But I go back in 6 weeks, so maybe I'll be more prepared by then with help from you guys on here.
All this was at 2:30 pm and it's now 11:00pm and my left hip is SWOLLEN and hurts so BAD, I have ICE EVERYWHERE! IS this normal or did he hit a nerve or what is going on? (the steroid injection was in the knee)
I am so tired of all of this.
I am also sick of everyone telling me, so & so had surgery and is fine, so why aren't you? so & so stopped there pain meds after there procedure, so what's your problem? are you hooked on drugs? I'm to the point I just hang up on people now or go to my room and LOCK the door.
They have never had a spinal fusion, or a pinched nerve or Sciatica. So They have no right to judge me.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

Dear Sandollar.....

I am so sorry to hear you are going thru so much. I have no idea why the hip area would be so swollen after an injection in the knee.

I'm thinking a lot of what's happening is back-related exacerbating all the rest of the symptoms...weakness, etc. I just had a consult with a back specialist because of severe left leg pain and weakness. He thinks I have a compressed nerve at L-5. I have to do an MRI.

One thing at a time....good they are trying to rule out the issues separately.
In the meantime, the heck with everyone else and what they say. Don't let them upset you. It's not worth it. You have to think of you and, ultimately, we are our own advocates and have to take some sort of control of our bodies. If you're not happy with the findings, get another opinion. And another if need be.

Hang in there.....and good luck!!!
Linda

Re: Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

Hi Linda,
Yes, My Doctor has mentioned several times how he thought most of my problems must be coming from my back, I actually had to beg him to take a good look at my knee's because he couldn't figure it out. Finally he got to the point where he said there is nothing he could do, because he thought my back was causing it all. But when I was working and my back didn't bother me, I could feel the inside of my knee and knew something wasn't right.
I asked him to please try to scope the knee and just take a look, he did and thats when he found all the problems and the right knee not having any cartalidge left, and tons of arthititis in both knees that he trimmed up really good.
Today my left hip is still a little swollen and the lower lumbar region is VERY painful. Maybe the needle DID upset the nerve more.
I do know one thing, I agree with him, I HAVE to get those ESI's done in my back ASAP. it's getting worse everyday.
I don't know why now. But it's like it woke up during either one of 2 things:
One Doctor is trying me on Topomax and i have had severe back pain since then. OR at THAT time, Is also when I had the Double Knee Surgery and I was moved in a way that could of pinched the nerve more.
I haven't needed ESI's in years, And now I can barely walk and CAN'T sit down or lay down or sleep.
Thanks for listening.

Re: Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

sandollar.....

Sounds like the knee surgery could have irritated an already angry nerve from the back.

Have you thought about seeing a neurosurgeon? That's where I am at this point....trying to decide whether I should consult with an ortho back doc or a neurosurgeon. It's a toss-up.....

Again, good luck!
Linda

Re: Why are my knee's so weak?=PLEASE EXPLAIN-Post Surgery

Linda,
Yes, I thought about it, but never really took much time considering it.
From every angle I've been told there is NO WAY to unpinch a nerve. And if that's true, then why bother with ANOTHER DOCTOR? I don't really know what a Neurosurgeon could do for me...
